A quick rundown of used
bookstores in Eugene.
• Smith Family Bookstore,
located just off campus at 768 E.
13th Ave., is one of the more
popular used bookstores in the
campus area.
Featuring used books of all
types, shapes, sizes and prices,
Smith’s also carries a variety of
used magazines, posters and
comic books. The store does
not trade, however.
Claims that the store’s prices
for buy-backs are competitive
with the University Bookstore
are substantiated by the large
number of people roaming the
aisles of Smith’s. The actual
buy-back price is based on
figures from a dealer’s guide, so
prices fluctuate with supply and
demand.
• Book Fair is located farther
from campus at 1409 Oak St.,
and caters to a slightly different
crowd. Trading, a major focus of
the Book Fair’s business, allows
them to carry a larger selections
of books, according to the
management.
Buy-backs depend upon the
demand of the book, but the
average is about 20 to 25 per
cent of the original price. Varie
ty is the strength of this store,
and the lack of textbooks is off
set by its supply of used
records, art prints and comic
books.

trade.

backs, Western Exchange may
be an even more useful store
now that new paperback prices
often are comparable to hard
back prices at times.
The store sells books at one
half the publisher’s price and
trades at one-fourth the pub

• The Fantasy Shop, now
relocated to 770 E. 13th Ave. and
next to Smith’s, is indeed a fan
tasy for comic book and
magazine fans.
Although The Fantasy Shop
does carry a few posters and
records, out-of-print comics
stacked high on the walls are
the store’s specialty.
