Book-buying Books to satisfy even the most devoted reader can be found in Eugene’s used book stores By DAWN GARCIA Ol the Emerald Webster’s dictionaries cost 40 cents, and you can take The llliad and The Odyssey by Homer home for 30 cents. Everything from Shakespeare to X-Men comic books appear on the shelves of Eugene’s used book stores. Selection and price varies from store to store, and some also trade and buy books, ser vices profitable to the student interested in alternative book buying. A quick rundown of used bookstores in Eugene. • Smith Family Bookstore, located just off campus at 768 E. 13th Ave., is one of the more popular used bookstores in the campus area. Featuring used books of all types, shapes, sizes and prices, Smith’s also carries a variety of used magazines, posters and comic books. The store does not trade, however. Claims that the store’s prices for buy-backs are competitive with the University Bookstore are substantiated by the large number of people roaming the aisles of Smith’s. The actual buy-back price is based on figures from a dealer’s guide, so prices fluctuate with supply and demand. • Book Fair is located farther from campus at 1409 Oak St., and caters to a slightly different crowd. Trading, a major focus of the Book Fair’s business, allows them to carry a larger selections of books, according to the management. Buy-backs depend upon the demand of the book, but the average is about 20 to 25 per cent of the original price. Varie ty is the strength of this store, and the lack of textbooks is off set by its supply of used records, art prints and comic books. • J. Michaels, found at I0I W. Besides buying back used books, J. Michaels also offers a large selection of used books, though few textbooks Specializing in art, architecture, photography, Western Amer icana and literature, the store does offer a few texts in those areas. The buy-back averages about 20 to 30 percent of the original price, with increased value in trade. • Western Exchange, working mostly in paperback trading, is located in the outskirts of Eugene at 225 River Road. The store sells books at one half the publisher’s price and trades at one-fourth the pub lisher’s price in credit. • The Fantasy Shop, now relocated to 770 E. 13th Ave. and next to Smith’s, is indeed a fan tasy for comic book and magazine fans.
