An internationally acclaimed
Cuban novelist and essayist,
Emundo Desnoes, will speak on
“Writing Under Capitalism,
Writing Under Socialism” at
7:30 p.m. Thursday at the
University.
The free lecture will be held in

Born in Havana, Cuba, in
1930, Desnoes is presently ad
viser to the Cuban Ministry of
Culture. He has been editor of
the literary supplement to the
official Cuban newspaper
“Revolucion,” was editor of
“Arts and Literature” magazine
and was a member of the edi
torial board of “Casa de las
Americas” magazine.
His works include two collec
tions of essays and three
novels. He also wrote the
screenplay “Memories of Un
derdevelopment." based on
one of the novels.
Former professor of cultural
history at the School on
Industrial Design in Cuba, Des
noes is presently visiting pro
fessor of Latin American litera
ture at Stanford University.

Deirdre English, author, filmmaker and
editor of Mother Jones magazine, will be
showing her Vietnam documentary film "The
Year of the Tiger” today at 2:30 p.m. in
Studio B of the IMC. She will also speak
today at 8 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom on
"Women's Brains and Women's Bodies: A
Feminist History of Medicine.”
Woman In Communication, Inc. will pre
sent a program today at 7 p.m. in the Forum
Room, EMU, entitled "Job Snatching Stra
tegies." Bob Caldwell, editor of the Spring
field News will discuss tips on how to write a
resume, how to prepare for a job interview
and what an employer is looking for in a
prospective employee.

four Children's Arts and Crafts Festivals
slated for June. Festivals occur on Satur

volunteering at one or more festivals should

Trade Kaufman Senior Center is seeking
donations of furniture, appliances, plants,
produce and other items for the center's
annual yard sale in July. The annual sale is
the center's major fundraising event.
Proceeds are used to purchase equipment
