Theta Chi seeks help for library The Theta Chi fraternity is seeking student signa tures to support the University faculty’s recent $2.5-million improvement request for the library. The faculty petition, sent out by President Boyd on Feb. 25, outlines the library’s needs for a funding increase and a request for Program Improvement budget funds. Describing the library as being in “serious trouble,” the letter and signatures are to be sent to the State Board of Higher Education. Through consultation with Dean of Students Robert Bowlin, the Theta Chi members decided to be sent from the student body to the Oregon Legislature. “We want to show both the Legislature and the faculty that the students place a lot of importance on the library as well," says house pres. Bruce Campbell. Acting University Librarian Donald Smith feels the petition is a “fine and encouraging idea" idea and feels optimistic toward the attention it will receive. “It can’t help but help," he says. Campbell says the petition, addressed to both the Legislature and Governor Atiyeh, is similar to the faculty’s document in wording and structure. The fraternity members, who began petitioning on May 5, are aiming for at least 5,000 signatures. "Because of the general concern people have shown, I’m sure we won’t have too much trouble in reaching our goal," Campbell says.
