Adams leads Oregon to Civil War win By JOHN SELIX Of the Emerald The McArthur Court crowd gave the opponents a healthy booing. One player received a technical foul. There were bodies hitting each other and the floor all night long. There were 36 fouls and 77 turnovers. By the end of the game, the tension between the two teams could almost be felt. No doubt this was a typical Oregon-Oregon State game and proof that the Civil War rivalry has spread to women’s basketball. The Ducks battled the Beavers Friday night at Mac Court and scored an impressive 74-58 victory to give Oregon a 3-0 record and a first place standing in the Coast Divsion of the Northwest League. ‘‘I predicted a win by about the same score,” said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny. The game started ominously for Oregon. The Beavers took a 4-0 lead and the Ducks committed turnovers their first three times down the court. But when Oregon’s Bev Smith got the Ducks on the scoreboard with a long jump shot, the Beavers were the ones who lost their composure. Heiny’s full court press forced several OSU tur novers. The Ducks scored 10 straight points and never trailed again, though the Beavers remained within striking range throughout the contest. Forward Debbie Adams was the star for Oregon, scoring 26 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. She burned the Beavers constantly by getting behind the defense for easy layups, and kept Oregon pos sessions alive by working ag gressively on the offensive boards. Adams was also award ed a technical foul with 8:01 left in the game after she was whis tled for a foul by one of the officials. The technical came at a crucial point in the game. OSU’s 6-4 center Carol Menken had scored eight straight points for the beavers, who had cut a 13 point deficit to seven to make it anybody's game. But Oregon OSU center Carol Menken (33) got her usual 28 points, but the Oregon women got the win, 74-58 to remain undefeated in league play. Swimming teams lose There were few surprises at Leighton pool Friday night as the powerful University of Washington swim team out swam the Ducks in a coed meet. The Huskies took a 69-44 vic tory in the men's competition, and completed the sweep with a 76-37 women’s victory. Steve Vela and Jeff Smith were bright spots for the Duck men in the losing cause. Smith was a double winner, with victories on the one- and three meter diving boards. Vela was the front end of a one-two finish for the Ducks in the 200 meter butterfly as his 1:55.3 edged Jeff Morgan s 1:55.18for the victory. Kathy Hemmer was a triple winner for the women’s team, swimming to victories in the 100 and 500 freestyle and the 100 butterfly events. The women’s diving team was again dominant as Debbie Sill and Staci Voorhees finished first and second on the one meter board and Voorhees and Laura McNaught did the same on the three-meter board. "We want teams to die when we get up by 10, but they just kept coming to the end.” With about four minutes remaining, a frustrated Betty Codings (OSU's starting guard) knocked an Oregon band member's music sheets to the floor. Both teams played hard, but one team played better. "We didn't play the game the way we wanted to play it ton ight,” said Menken, who fin ished the game with 28 points. "We didn't play our tempo, but I think that when we get them on our home court (Feb. 29), we ll play our game. We want them bad” Steelers! The Pittsburgh Steelers claimed their fourth Super Bowl win the last six years by over coming a stubborn Los Angeles Ram squad, 31-19 in Pasadena, Calif., Sunday. Down 19-17 in the final per iod, the Steelers’ quarterback Terry Bradshaw rifled a touch down pass to John Stallworth for the go-ahead score.
