4 Photo by Doug Williams Students oppose Mobil recruiter Blasting ‘Big Oil’ A campus visit by a Mobil Oil recruiter Monday was met by University students and community members protesting "oil monopolies ” The recruiter, Murray Mendenhall, spoke to students in the Geology building about a career with the oil corporation. Local groups, among them Students for a Nuclear-Free Future, the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee. Live Without Trident and the Trojan Decommissioning Alliance, picketed, passed out leaflets and is sued a political statement in opposition to "oil monopolies" during Menden hall's visit Literature posted around campus and handed out during the protest says the eight largest oil corporations in the United States control 64 percent of the world's known oil reserves. 60 percent of the natural gas reserves and 45 percent of the known uranium re* serves “Beyond controlling uranium re serves, Mobil, Exxon, Gulf, and others are throughly integrated into all phases of the nuclear fuel cycle,” the literature says “But these same companies, perhaps more than anyone, understand the severe limitations of these non renewable energy sources ” The information claims five of the nine major (photovoltaic firms in the United States have recently been pur chased by major oil companies Also, 12 of the top 25 firms in the solar industry are owned by oil and aerospace corporations, it says, adding that geothermal exploration in this country is being conducted largely by the major oil companies IFC elects Cohen as chairer Adam Cohen was elected In cidental Fee Committee chairer at the new committee's first meeting Monday The meeting was limited to an administrative briefing from ASUO Vice Pres Dennis Correction In Monday's story on the University Office of Affirma tive Action, the name of the assistant compliance officer was misspelled as Bea McFadden The correct spelling is Bean McFadden Mohatt, assignments to monitor programs and a discussion of procedure and bylaws Cohen, who was an IFC ap pointee in June, was elected unanimously to the chair posi tion. *1*11 do a good job,' Cohen said "I appreciate your sup port " Ken Brittain was elected vice chairer over Alan Contreras in a 4-3 vote Mohatt advised the commit tee not to fee! obligated to solve every problem of every program that comes to the IFC "If programs come in here and lay all their problems on you, don't feel like you always have to respond,” he said "That's our job " Mohatt said the committee should work with the ASUO ex ecutive office to help solve a communication problem between the ASUO and its pro grams He said the IFC can help by channeling problems to him “I hope we can work together," Mohatt said. "It's real important that we do " The ASUO and the IFC should work together to form a budget time line, according to Mohatt.
