Canadian tours provide bikers' haven If gas is hard to come by in the states, why not try the nearest foreign country... by bicycle, eh? The Canadian RocKies provide a natural adventure for bikers, says Andrew Kyle of Wayward Tours in Vancouver, British Columbia. "The road (the Icefields Highway) is uniquely pressed up against the mountains, and impressions are much sharper from a bicycle." Wayward Tours is one of several cycle companies that provide group excursions for those who don't want to plan their own self-propelled I cng distance trips. This one covers territory from Jasper to Banff. Alberta, within many of Canada’s major national parks. For approximately $125, bikers are given meals, escort vehicles to carry gear, emer gency supplies and a camping canopy. The trip lasts six days. Kyle says, "If you and your bicycle don't want to brave the hills, an escort vehicle can take you up to where gravity works in your favor again." The advantage of traveling Wayward Tours, according to employee Audrey Fedoration, is that it can accomodate large groups and maintain less work for those involved, with its “deluxe camping gear." Departure dates from Banff are June 12, July 1, 15. 28 and August 12. In the other direc tion, groups will leave from Jasper June 22, July 8, 22. August 5 and 19. (604) 689-8986 Also touring Canada in smaller groups is Rocky Moun tain Cycle Tours, run by the Canadian Hostelling Associa tion (CHO). This group makes use of a chain of conveniently spaced hostels 30 miles apart, from Banff to Jasper, or a loop from Banff to Radium to Banff. The Canadian hostels provide simple, inexpensive overnight lodging for anyone traveling in Canada. They range from simple mountain huts to modem buildings. "Campgrounds are so overcrowded,” but reservations for hostels need not be made in advance for travelers in Canada who want a place to stay, says Bruce Reekie, coordinator of the Mountain Region CHO. The seven-day tours spon sored by the CHO provide transportation if needed, from Calgary to Banff or Jasper to Calgary and back; all meals, gear carried in support vehicles and guide services. Groups leave July 1, 15 and August 5, at a cost of $185 per person. Reekie advise bikers to have top-shape 5 or 10-speed bicycles, spare parts (tires, tubes, spokes), sleeping bags, warm clothes and rain gear. The average incline is 1.000 meters, and Reekie says anyone who is moderately fit should have no trouble on the trip. Some of the highlights along the Banff-Jasper route include Lake Louise. Johnston Canyon, Morraine Lake. Valley of the Ten Peaks. Bow Summit, Pey ton Lake Lookout, the Columbia Icefields and Athabaska Falls.
