Banner rebuff brings life term
A Eugene woman has been
sentenced to life in prison for
refusing to kiss the American
flag in Eugene's Valley Creek
Center three months ago
Cynthia Cocis. 43. an
employee of Clergy and Laity
Discontent, was sentenced
Thursday by Municipal Court
Judge A S Shole to spend the
the rest of her life in Oregon's
Correctional Recreation Facility
in Salem, with little chance of
parole.
Dr Armond Getzwet. former head of the Three Mile
Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, told a small
University science audience Thursday night that there is ab
solutely no danger with nuclear *waste from the crippled
plant
Elections criticized
Candidate Tim Christ swept
the ASUO presidential race with
more than 60 percent ot the
vote in balloting Wednesday
and Thursday, but his victory
has already come under
challenge
Sore loser Scott Bas
setthound said Thursday night
that Christ had unfairly used his
name to win the vote "He's
identified himself with a
religious leader and that’s just
not right."
Bassetthound vowed to take
his grievance to the ASUO
Constitution Committee for a
decison His has received sup
port from losers Mine Lean and
Amy Tobeus who have been
promised jobs with Bas
setthound if his complaint is
successful
"Hey, it’s like mixing church
and state if Christ gets the job,"
Tobeus said "Personally, I'm
surprised students voted for
him I thought Christ was out of
vogue."

said he was sorry Christ had
chosen to campaign with the
slogan, "He is risen "„
Cocis was convicted earlier
this week by a six-member Jury
of criminal use ot social con
sciousness She has yet to ap
peal the verdict.
Cocis' conviction stemmed
from her arrest in January for
refusing to kiss the American
flag in Eugene's fashionable
Valley Creek Center, a shop
ping mall near the Willamette
River
Cocis and several other
volunteer workers participated
in the center's International
Year of the Exploited Chlid
display in January Cocis'
display, calling for the boycott
Atiyeh to kids:
Drop dead
SALEM — Gov Vic Atiyeh
said Thursday that if he had his
way. the state of Oregon would
gather up and execute all the
foreign students attending state
schools
Atiyeh told reporters that
although the state has a law
against executing foreigners,
he thinks it could be amended
to mean only white foreigners,
not Arabs The law was passed
by the 1968 legislature and
specified that foreign students
could only be executed in the
time of a national emergency
Rather than execute foreign
students. Atiyeh said, the
legislature should raise tuition
rates to starve them to death
"I think this should take care
of all the troubles they have
caused school officials with
their fancy cars,'' Atiyeh said
Atiyeh also said the students
from foreign countries did not
fit into Oregon's lifestyle
because none of them knew
how to ski or log a hillside
“They don't deserve our
clean air," the governor said
"They should be back in the
sand dunes where they
belong "

land that none of use will ever
see. but I cannot condone your
refusal to kiss our fig that has
waved so long over the land of
the free." Shole said
Although her lawyers argued
that Cocls waa within her cona
tltutional rights to call for a
boycott of neo-nazlsm, city
prosecutors said she was a
rabble-rouser who “might Incite
people to use their freedom of
speech as a way to change the
status quo ’’
During the three-day trial,
Valley Creek Center's newly
hired Security Chief Shah
Mohammed Reza Pahlavl. who
recently moved to Eugene from
the Bahamas, testified that
Cocls had also refused to wear
a brown shirt and swastika arm
band required of all shoppers in
the mall
Cocls will begin her sentence
sometime next month Judge
Shole also told Cocls she was
lucky she didn't get the death
penalty, restored by voters last
November
