Ducks seek second dual win over UCLA

the shot put last week, will be in the limelight again this Saturday
as Oregon takes on UCLA at Hayward Field

This year’s track season — only three weeks
old — already seems to be approaching a
climax for the Oregon Ducks and the UCLA
Bruins
The two teams will challenge each other
with some of the top athletes in the nation
Saturday at Hayward Field as the Ducks go
after their second straight conquest of last
year’s NCAA runners-up
"In a meet like this." says Oregon coach Bill
Dellinger, every event is a key event In every
event, we have a chance of winning and in
those we can't win. we have to take second "
As in past Oregon-UCLA meets, the Ducks
should dominate the middle and long distance
while the Bruins will rule the sprints and
jumping events Oregon coach Bill Dellinger
agrees
"To offset their strength in the horizontal
jumps.” says Dellinger, "we have to counter
with at least a 1-2 (first and second place finish)
— if not a sweep — in the 800 meters, 1.500
and 5,000 "
"The Bruins have three long jumpers —
Chip Berson, Dokie Williams, and Scott
Stauch — who have gone over 25 feet, while
the Ducks' top man this year is Jon Ogard with
a season best of 23-4 In the triple jump. UCLA
has three jumpers over the 51-foot mark, while
Oregon is led by Gary Lacey's season best of
50-4
Oregon's return to power in the distance
events was underscored at last week’s dual
meet with the University of Washington When
Rudy Chapa ran to a school record of 13:19 2
in the 5,000 meters This week, though. Chapa
will run both the 800 and the 1.500. while Al
berto Salazar runs the 1,500 and 5.000 Lead
ing the Ducks in the steeplechase will be Don
Clary, who ran the race in 8 42 11 two weeks
ago against Brigham Young Larry Hurst, who
won the event last week when Clary competed
in the 5.000. has a season best of 9 01 and a
career mark of 8 40 8 UCLA may offer a
challenge in that event, according to
Dellinger
"UCLA has a good steeplechaser (Roger
Watkm. with a best of 8:50 88). but I noticed
they did not run him last week (against the
University of California), probably resting him
up for this week's meet "
With the number of mismatches in many of
the events, most of the attention will be cen
tered on the team race The Bruins had taken
10 straight dual meets from Oregon until last
year, when the Ducks won. 83-71 at Hayward
Field
This year, the Ducks have gone over the
100-point mark in three successive dual meets
against Cal-lrvine. Brigham Young and
Washington, while the Bruins field a 4-1
record UCLA defeated California last week.
86-68. after an 83-71 loss to Tennessee in Los
Angeles
The premier event at this year s meet may
be the shot put. as UCLA will send Dave Laut.
last year's NCAA champion, against the
Ducks' Jeff Stover Stover set a personal
record of 65-3 against the Huskies last week
Laut also set a personal record of 66-55 last
week and is favored, but Dellinger says Stover
has a good shot at upsetting Laut
"Jeff s been throwing well all week and I
think he'll have a good day against UCLA."
says the coach, "but he s also throwing
against the top shot putter in the nation "
The shot put won't be a two-way affair,
though, as Laut and Stover are joined by
UCLA's Marcus Gordien (63-6 75) and
Oregon s Vince Goldsmith (61-6) Gordien and
Goldsmith each set personal bests last week
