With Duck coach Emory "Buzz"
Summers putting less emphasis on
winning, the team has been able to
relax more during matches This ability
to relax may help the team win the
Northern Division Champion ship
"For the first time in three or four
years, we really have a chance to win
the Northern Division," says team cap
tain Tom Goldman "This year,
everyone gets along well And a big
part of that is coach (Summers)
"I still think a lot of players tighten up
because they want to win so badly,"
says Goldman, who has been playing in
the number four singles spot for the
Ducks "But Summers is stressing
winning a lot less (than in previous
years) He even ends practices with
jokes It loosens us and subsequently
helps us win "
Since four of last season’s players
Eric Lehto. Steve Bolstad. Jim Lowell,
and Don Holman-did not return this
season, Summers needed to develop a
team harmony
"We lose players because we don't
have scholarships." says Summers. "If
we had scholarships, they'd probably
stay on and participate "
With mostly new players, the team
started the season poorly when they
went 1 -4 on the California road trip But
the trip could have been a blessing in
disguise, says Goldman
"Nobody really had a good road trip,
but we saw benefits. " he says "We got
more unity out of it and we really got
tested "
Upon returning. Oregon defeated
Southern Oregon State College, but
last weekend the Ducks lost to Portland
and Washington The Ducks can even
the score against the Pilots and
Huskies in the division championships
"The feeling right now is that we can
revenge some of these earlier matches
at the division championships." says
Stewart Bartlett, one of Oregon’s top
two freshmen The other is number
three singles man Thor Carlson
Gerry Farmer has anchored the
number one singles spot so far this
season Playing for SOSC two years
ago. Farmer was the 1977 Evergreen
Conference singles champion
"He (Farmer) has got good strength
and endurance," says Summers, who
has junior Tom Greider at number two
singles
Greider can hang on until the last
point, so he always has a chance to
win," says Summers
Greider says he benefits from
Summers' relaxed coaching
