Applications for the Oregon Guaranteed Student Loan Program and the Federally In sured Student Loan Program, as well as addresses for ob taining forms for other state Guaranteed Student Loan Programs, are available in the Office of Student Financial Aid. To apply for a GSL or FISL: 1. Complete the appropriate application. 2. Submit the application to the Office of Student Financial Aid. If you have any other form of financial aid, you must see a financial aid counselor to de termine your eligibility for addi tional assistance. 3. After the Office of Student Financial Aid has completed its section of the application, take it to the designated lend ing institution for final ap proval. Loans take approximately six to eight weeks io process. A The Law Enforcement ** Education Program (LEEP) enables full time emp loyees of law enforcement or criminal justice agencies to apply for federal grants of up to a maximum of $250 per term to cover tuition for full time en rollment at the University. The amount is prorated for less than full time enrollment. Loans to cover costs for tui tion above $250 are available to full time students who are employed by, or on leave of absence from, law enforce ment or criminal justice agen cies. The Law Enforcement Edu cation Program is coordinated by The Wallace School of Community Service and Pub lic Affairs, 119 Hendricks Hall, Eugene, Oregon 97403. In formation and applications are available from the training coordinator in your agency or from Kenneth Viegas at CSPA, Hendricks Hall. An in terview is necessary to deter mine your eligibility. QWhat state programs for aid are available? A State of Oregon Cash /"I Awards are made to resident undergraduates who demonstrate great potential for academic success based on high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores as well as eligi bility for financial aid. Awards vary from $100 to $500 per academic year, depending on your financial aid eligibility. State of Oregon Need Grants are awarded to resi dent undergraduates who have sufficient financial aid eligibility. Awards to students who plan to attend the Univer sity of Oregon will probably vary from $100 to $500 for the 1979-80 academic year, de pending on analysis of their eligibility for aid. Cash Awards or Need Grants may be renewed for 12 terms. You must 1 Apply each year. 2. Be enrolled full time (12 hours per term) at an eligible institution. 3 Complete satisfactorily a minimum of 36 credits per academic year. To apply for a Need Grant or a Cash Award, 1. Complete a Financial Aid Form and submit it with the appropriate fee to the College Scholarship Service. 2. Indicate on the Financial Aid Form that the Oregon State Scholarship Commission is to receive a copy. The State Scholarship Commission determines your eligibility and notifies you and the school you plan to attend. The funds, which are provided by the state and federal gov ernments, are disbursed by the school. QWhat other kinds of as sistance are available? A Deferred tuition loans for a maximum of two-thirds of tuition (instructional fee plus incidental fees) can be applied for if you do not have a record of delinquent University ac counts. Payments are at least one-third of your tuition, plus general deposit and fees pay able at registration. The bal ance is payable in two equal installments (three for law stu dents) during the term. (Defer red tuition policies and dates for payment are listed in the Time Schedule of Classes and Student Handbook. If you are receiving financial aid. it is im portant that you read the spe cial instructions and restric tions.) There is a service charge of $3.00 ($4.50 for law students) to cover administra tive costs. Applications are available during registration at the Deferred Tuition table in the area where tuition is paid. A Short term loans up to a f \ maximum of $150 are available for thirty to ninety days. (In an extreme emer gency and after consultation with a financial aid counselor and approval of the Director of Student Financial Aid, you may be able to borrow $250.) To be eligible for a short term loan, you must meet the following requirements 1. Be enrolled at least half time. 2. Have no more than one out standing short term loan. 3. Have no record of delin quent accounts with the Uni versity. A $4.00 service charge is made on each loan; however, no interest is charged. A To be eligible for a r \ University Long Term Loan, you are required to 1. Be at least a halt time stu dent. 2. Have completed success fully at least one term at the University of Oregon. 3. Be in good academic stand ing. 4. Provide two qualified co signers. (Faculty, staff, and students are not eligible to co-sign.) Borrowing limits per academic year are 1. Freshmen, $200 2. Sophomores, $400 3. Juniors, $600 4. Seniors and graduate stu dents, $800. Cumulative total that can be borrowed is $800. Interest is charged at the rate of 4 per cent per year until you are no longer enrolled half time. Repayment, in equal monthly installments, begins the first day of the fourth month after termination of enrollment. As soon as you are no longer enrolled at least half time, the annual interest becomes 6 per cent on the unpaid balance until the loan is paid in full. To obtain an application, you must have an appointment with a financial aid counselor. A The Oregon State Em /» ployment Office main tains a Job Service Office on campus to assist University students, their spouses, and dependents in finding part time work. No fee is charged for the service. You should re gister at the Job Service Of fice, 1511 Agate, Eugene, Oregon 97403. Food Service and resident assistant positions are avail able to some students who live in the dormitories. You should apply at the Housing Office, Walton Hall. Indicate on the FAF that the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant Program receive a copy. 4. If you are a resident, indicate that the Oregon State Scholarship Commission re ceive a copy. 5. If you are a transfer student, supply a financial aid transfer record from any other post secondary school you have at tended. The appropriate form(s) will be sent to you from our office (or you may pick up as many as you need) after we have received your FAF. You must complete part of the form and then send one to each postsecondary institution you have attended. The transfer record will be completed in the school’s financial aid office and returned to us. A Graduate students: f \ 1. Contact these departments and divisions di rectly about possible posi tions. A For departmental or school scholarships, undergraduate and graduate students who have selected a major field should contact their school or department about possible scholarships and ap plication procedures and re quirements. Graduate assistantships and fellowships, which include a tuition waiver and a monthly salary or stipend, are offered to outstanding graduate stu dents by many departments. A Most scholarships awarded through the Office of Student Financial Aid are awarded on the basis of financial aid eligibility as well as academic achievement. All scholarships administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid are governed by the Uni versity Scholarships Commit tee composed of five faculty members, an administrator, and two students (appointed by the ASUO). This committee reviews and formulates policies and evaluates your academic qualifications, and the Office of Student Financial Aid determines your financial aid eligibility. Applications and recom mendation forms are available in the Office of Student Finan cial Aid. The deadline for scho larship application is March 1, 1979. A National Merit Scholar * \ ships are also sponsored by the University. Three four year scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,500 per aca demic year are awarded. In terested high school students should contact their high school counselors and take the PSAT/NSMQT test in their junior year. This test is usually offered during the month of October. Applications QWhat is the deadline for applying for financial aid? A To be given primary con sideration for the Na tional Direct Student Loan, College Work-Study Program, and Supplemental Educa tional Opportunity Grant for all or part of the 1979-80 academic year, your applica tion (and financial aid transfer record, if applicable) must be in the Office of Student Finan cial Aid by March 1, 1979. QDo I have to provide in formation about my parents’ financial status? A According to federal reg f \ ulations governing fi nancial programs, you are considered dependent during the 1979-80 academic year and must provide parental fi nancial information on the FAF if any one of the statements below is true. 1. You lived (or will live) with your parents for more than six weeks in 1978,1979, or 1980. 2. You were (or will be) listed as an exemption on your par ents’ U S. income tax returns for 1978, 1979, or 1980. 3. You did (or will) receive fi nancial assistance of $750 or more from your parents during 1978, 1979, or 1980. QWhat will it cost me to attend the University? A Budgets established for r\ financial aid purposes are based on avereage ex penses except for tuition and fees. Some students will have higher costs in one category or another. For example, stu dents in Architecture and Al lied Arts, some of the science departments, and the School of Music will have expenses ranging from $3.00 to $200 per year for equipment, supplies, and/or field trips in addition to books. If you live in a single room at the University Inn, or do not share an apartment, you may pay more than the budgeted amount for meals and housing.
