et al Wildlife report discussed The Survival Center will be sponsoring a meeting this evening for those persons interested in commenting on the "Draft Environmental Impact Statement: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Sen/ice’s Mammalian Pre dator Damage Management for Livestock Protection in the Western United States." The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the EMU, room to be posted. Included at the meeting will be a slide presentation on the subject of predator control by Sara Polenick, Northwest Field Representative for Defenders of Wildlife. The comment period on this statement ends Feb. 11. Copies of the statement will be available at the meeting from the Survival Center, Suite I, EMU. Preview bus deadline set Friday is the deadline for bus reservations for Portland and Salem area residents who want chartered bus transportation to Eugene Feb. 10 to attend the University Preview. Cost is $6 from Portland and $5 from Salem for the roundtrip. The Preview is a day-long program to introduce the University to prospective students and their parents. Students at any level in high school or those enrolled in community colleges are encouraged to attend. The day's events include a series of morning presentations in various academic areas and afternoon sessions on “special interest” topics such as financial aid, the Honors College, sports, student gov ernment, housing, health care and performing arts. Essay competition opens A $250 first place prize will be awarded to winners of a political essay competition, which has an April 1 deadline. The title of the essay is “The Principles of Free Government.” The Philo Sherman Bennett competition also will award $150 for second prize and $100 for third prize. Center plans assessed Plans for a two-block civic center complex in downtown Eugene will come before the Eugene City Council at a meeting today. The Eugene Civic Center Commission recommended last week that the council accept a New York architectural firm's plan for develop ing the two-block area bounded by 6th and 7th avenues and by Oak and Olivo stroots An $18.5-million bond issue for a performing arts facility and park ing was approved by Eugene voters last year. Hardy Holzmann Pfeiffer Associates of New York have recom mended using the west block of that area for performing arts facility, which, as now proposed, will include a music hall, theater and parking on one block of the site. The council will consider the recommendation at 1130 a m. today at the Kings Table in the Oakway Mall. Review asks for poetry The National Poetry Press, publisher of the College Poetry Review, announces that the dosing date for the submission of manuscripts by college students is Feb. 15. Any student attending either junior or senior college is eligible to submit his or her verse. There is no limitation as to form or theme. Shorter works are preferred because of space limitations. Each poem must be typed or printed on a separate sheet and must bear the name and home address of the student and the college address as well.
