Chinese pact discussed Chinese specialist Mark Sheldon will be speaking today on "U S. and China; Where Do We Go From Here 7’ Sheldon is the vice-chairer of the U.S.-China People’s Friendship Association, and is a Methodist Seminar Specialist for the United Na tions. He has visited China as a member of international study groups. His speech wil be at 12:15 today at the First Methodist Church on 14th Avenue and Olive Street, and is sponsored by the First Methodist Church in Eugene and by the Eugene branch of the United Nations Association. County arts positions open Lane County residents interested in the arts are invited to apply for appointment to the Lane County Arts Advisory Committee. The 12-member committee advises the Board of County Commis sioners on the use of funds and selection of art work for display in county facilities. Members are appointed to serve two years. Currently there are three vacancies on the committee. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Jan. 19. The program is free and open to the public. Speaking will be Paulette Nichols, assistant director of the New York-based organization. Operation Crossroads Africa is a 21-year-old non-profit organi zation for international development and educational exchange. Through its programs volunteers may spend summers in rural African communities working in such areas as art, oral history, archeology, agriculture, public health, journalism and construction of public facilities. Students may arrange to receive academic credit for the work. The organization has sent more than 5,000 volunteers to Africa since it began its programs. Volunteer siblings needed The Big Brother/Sister Program, which is funded by the Eugene 4J School District and has a University branch located in the Campus YWCA and YMCA, is conducting a special Big Brother/Sister Recruit ment Week in an dffort to recruit some 75 adult males to be a special friend to a youngster from a single-parent family. The program says that it has found that the presence of a stable adult can have a positive impact on a child by providing a consistent and dependable relationship. Big Brothers/Sisters are asked to commit themselves to this friend ship for three terms aid to keep up weekly, informal contacts in which they share their common interests.
