Women gymnasts remain undefeated The University women’s gymnastics team overwhelmed Portland State and Montana State in a triangular meet Saturday The Duck's team score was 125.60 to PSU's 106.70 and MSU's 79.45. Freshman Dawn Haberland led the Ducks, winning the all-around with 33.30 points. MSU’s Kathy King was second with 32.10 and Sara Gustafson and Shanron Blanchard took third and fourth for the Ducks with scores of 31.10 and 28.90. Haberland placed first individually in the vault. 8.70, floor exercise. 8.60, and balance beam, 8.40. Wendy Halberg scored 8.10 on the uneven bars to win that event. Halberg competed in the floor exercise and the uneven bars with a sprained thumb injured during her first vault. She decided to continue competing because the Ducks were short two players due to injuries and sickness. Coach Henrietta Heiny termed Halberg s effort heroic. She (Hai berg) is a person who gives where she's needed,” Heiny said. Heiny said the team improved this meet on the bars and the floor exercise. “Every individual did a better job on the floor;’ she said. The Duck’s coach predicted before the meet that Haberland would win the all-around. “Dawn just has a little more competitive background than Sara (Gustafson).” Gustafson beat Haberland last year for the Oregon prep all-around title. She (Gustafson) will beat Dawn again one day," Heiny continued. She learns a lot from being in these meets.” Saturday’s win was the women's third of the season. They defeated Oregon State and Denver on Nov. 28. The Ducks have two events on the road this week. They face Boise State in a dual meet Thursday and will participate in a four-way meet Saturday with teams from Eastern Montana, Montana and Oregon College of Education. Photo by Pm SuBwr Wendy Halberg, the only senior member of the Oregon women s gymnastics team, scored 8.10 points to win the uneven bars in the Duck’s triangular meet triumph over Portland State and Montana State Saturday Ducks road trip ends tonight at UCLA “I II be very glad to get back to Mac Court, that’s for sure,” says men’s basketball coach Jim Haney. The Ducks have played the last six games on the road, and tonight play powerful UCLA in Los Angeles. Friday the Ducks lost to USC 70-64, as their conference record slipped to 0-2. Oregon had 29 turnovers against USC, and Haney says im proving this statistic and rebound ing welt wilt be needed to beat the Bruins. "You just can’t commit 29 turnovers, and we’ve had that problem for the last three games,” he says. "You not only lose pos session of the ball, but you give the other team fast break oppor tunities.” Oregon out-rebounded USC 36-30, and outshot the Trojans 52 percent to 42 percent, and Haney hopes for the same things against UCLA. "We need to maintain that level of rebounding, and we have to be patient on our offense in order to get good shots,” he says. UCLA is known for its outstand ing shooters, and tonight's 8 p.m. televised game may be high scoring if Bruin guards Roy Hamil ton and Brad Holland get open and shoot. "They ’re both excellent shooters,” says Haney. “Hamilton is so quick, he can go around you if you guard him dose, and shoot a jumper if you give him room.” The Bruins are 1-1 in confer ence play, having lost to Stanford and beaten Oregon State. Last year the Bruins were undefeated in conference play, but coach Gary Cunningham thinks the loss may have helped his team. “I'm dis appointed we didn’t win the game, but I look at it as an excellent game experience-wise," he says. Experience is something UCLA has over the Ducks. UCLA starts three seniors, and two juniors, t*». f) white the Ducks are ail new to Haney’s system.
