Despite the injury, Stadler is glad her collegiate career has been extended for at least one more tournament. "I don’t know how this team will do," she says of the Ducks' chances. “All I hoped for going into the regionals was to play good volleyball, and I was a bit surprised how well we did. “I think we'll do all right as long as we don't get over-awed by the people on the other side of the net. I've seen that happen before at the nationals. Players just say, wow,' I think I’ll sit back and watch this.’’ Oregon can t afford to sit back. The Ducks are in a pool that in cludes second-ranked Hawaii, seventh-ranked San Jose 5tate and 10th-ranked Texas-Arlington. Oregon opens play Thursday morning at 10:30 against Pittsburgh, then faces San Jose and Alabama later in the day. On Friday the Ducks meet Hawaii at 9 a.m. and Arlington at 10:30. The top two teams from each of four pools advance to the semi finals. No matter how they fare, though, the Ducks will play as a team. Chris Voelz has made sure of that. Bliss and Hicks continue wrestling rivalry Friday Scott Bliss and Dan Hicks are beginning to establish a fairly healthy rivalry. In the finals of Saturday’s Arizona Invitational, Hicks, a defending national champion from Oregon State, edged the Ducks' Bliss, an all American himself, 4-3 in the 150-pound class. Friday night the two go at each other again when Oregon travels to Corvallis for a match with the Beavers starting at 7:30 p.m. “Hicks told me that Bliss gave him ttie most trouble he's had in a long time," said Oregon coach Ron Finley. “It was eight minutes of toe-to-toe, all-out wrestling. Those two always battle it out when they get together. They help each other improve.” Bliss was not the only Oregon wrestler beaten in the finals by an Oregon State opponent. After winning Ns semifinal bout with a pin in 59 seconds, No Neck Brown was defeated by the Beavers' Howard Harris 20-8 in the finals of the 190-pound division. The Ducks finished sixth in the 18-team tournament with 58 points. Cal Poly SLO won with 115 points, followed by Oregon State with 92 %, Minnesota with 83 and Oklahoma with 68 points. In addition to Bliss and Brown, four other Ducks placed in the top six. Freshman 118-pounder Adam Cuestes pinned Taylor Young of Arizona for fifth place, Barry Boyles (158) won by default over Arizona State's Roy Oliver to earn third place, 177-pounder Ryan Kelly was decisioned 7-2 by Rolling Waves flounder Ducks MALIBU, Calif (AP) — Ricardo Brown scored 22 points to lead Pepperdine to a 73-68 non conference college basketball vic tory over Oregon Monday night. The Waves, leading most of the way, withstood a late Oregon surge led by center Dan Hartshorne. Pepperdine’s lead was cut to 69-68 with 20 seconds remaining. Then Brown, a 6-foot junior guard, was fouled in the backcourt and made two free throws. Tony Fuller of Pepperdine added a lay-in just before the final buzzer. Center Ray Ellis had 14 points and guard Fuller had 13 for Pep perdine. Hartshorne led the Ducks with 18, guard Rob Closs had 12 and forward Phil Bamer had 11. Pepperdine of the West Coast Athletic Conference improved its record to 3-0 and Oregon fell to 2-1. Lonnie Draper of Washington but placed sixth, and heavyweight Craig Schoene earned fifth place with an 8-3 win over Northern Colorado’s Jeff Schandals. “I was very pleased with the performance of this young team,’’ commented Finley. “We were just a few matches away from finishing third or fourth." “We faced as tough competition as we will all year and did very well. If we learn from the experi ence we received in this tourna ment, we are going to surprise a lot of people." Brigham bowls perfect game Lynn Brigham, a freshman member of the University s bowl ing dub team, rolled his way to notoriety over the weekend with a perfect 300 game in the Boise State Invitational. Brigham sandwiched the 300 between games of 204 and 231 to capture the doubles competition with teammate Dave Higgins. “Right around the eighth frame I realized I had a chance,” said Brigham. “But I didn't worry about it. I just tried to get it out of my head.” The situation became tense in the ninth frame, however, when a crowd began to gather around Brigham's lane. By the tenth frame everyone had quit bowling and was watching. “I noticed the Bowler Minier lecturing class Rick Minier, a touring Pro fessional Bowlers’ Association member from Portland, will lec ture from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today to the advanced bowling class in the EMU Lanes.
