_making the news hMi*MoeMMM«wrapoitt SALT LAKE CITY — A District Court judge refused Thursday to stay the executions of Dale Pierre and William An drews, who are scheduled to die by firing squad next Thursday morning. Pierre, 25, of Brooklyn, N. Y„ and Andrews, 24, of Dallas, Texas, were convicted in 1974 of first-degree murder in the torture slayings of three Ogden, Utah, residents in the basement of a Hi-Fi Shop during a robbery. DURBAN, South Africa — Adam and Eve, the only sex shop in Durban, had its catalogue banned Thursday by the Publi cations Control Board. The catalogue - which gives explicit de scriptions of the sex aids sold in the shop - was seized two months ago during a vice squad raid. The sex shop, which recently has been taken over by a Swiss businessman, has proved a sorepoint for puritanical South African government officials. WASHINGTON — A civil defense expert says Pres. Carter's plans to seek an additional $2 billion over the next five years to upgrade the U.S. civil defense program is not good enough. Leon Coure, an associate director at the Advanced Interna tional Studies Institute, told reporters Wednesday “it is possible to insure national survival" despite the destructive power of modern nuclear weapons. “It’s a question of how much you want to spend for national survival." An ideal protection system, he added, might cost $60 billion. JAKARTA, Indonesia — The government plans to re lease 5,000 prisoners Monday, some of whom have been held 12 years without trial, government officials announced Thursday. The release brings the total number of prisoners released this year to about 10,000, officials said. They have been held since the outbreak of an abortive communist coup in 1965, the officials said. Carter reaffirms inflation stand WASHINGTON (AP) — Pres. Carter said Thursday he would risk his political future rather than water down his fight against infla tion. “I believe that is exactly what - the American people want,’’ he said. The president made the state ment at a nationally broadcast news conference in response to a question about whether he would continue the fight against inflation even if it meant reconciling himself to being a one-term president should his program prove politi cally unpopular. On defense spending. Carter did not say specifically whether he has decided definitely to increase the Pentagon budget by 3 per cent. "Our goal is to increase the real level of defense expendi tures," he said without citing a figure. On another topic, Carter said: •The United States will maintain "basically a deterrent policy” where defense issues are con cerned. Mixed emotions greet Nixoq at last stop on overseas trip1', OXFORD, England (AP) — Richard Nixon, showered with jeers and applause, protesters’ eggs and British courtesy, told a student group in this historic uni versity town Thursday he has re tired from politics but "I’m not going to keep my mouth shut.’’ “I feel as long as I have any breath in me I will speak up for what I believe,” the former presi dent told an audience of 800 in the hall of the prestigious Oxford Union debating society. During a 90-minute question and-answer session, Nixon was asked how he felt about being forced from office by the Water gate scandal. “I screwed up,” Nixon said. “I paid the price.” Nixon disclosed in his remarks that as president he had au thorized wiretaps and break-ins to root out a group of Palestinian ter rorists in the United States. The ex-president arrived and departed from the 19th-century building through a battery of 500 noisy, egg-tossing protesters, both British and American stu dents. During his 20-minute ad dress on foreign affairs and the 90-minute question-and-answer period that followed, he frequently had to speak over angry chants of “We Want Nixon Dead!” and "No More Nixon!” from the demon strators outside. As he left, protesters waving placards - “Why Shame Us Here?” "Nixon, Crawl Back Into Your Hole” - grappled with 80 police officers who linked arm in-arm in a vain effort to keep them from pounding on Nixon s black limousine. Police said there were 10 ar rests, but a police spokesman added, “On the whole, the de monstration was conducted in a good-humored way." The ex-president, apparently unscathed by the egg barrage, seemed calm and cracked an oc casional joke during his appear ance inside the high-ceilinged hall. He fielded generally polite questions about, among other things, Vietnam, East-West de tente and Watergate, the scandal that forced him to resign in dis grace four years ago. At the end he received a one minute standing ovation.
