Molten rock investigated The University has received a $40,600 grant from the National Science Foundation for continued study of a technique for using seismic waves — like those created by earthquakes — to locate and charac terize molten rock deposites deep beneath the earth’s surface. University geophysicist Harve Waff heads the research project, entitled “Acoustic Wave Propogation in Magmatic Liquids.” According to Waff, his University laboratories have been equipped with special chambers which simulate the intense heat and pressure upon rocks 150 to 200 miles within the earth, and with “electromechani cal transducers” which create ultrasonic waves similar to seismic waves. By measuring the speed at which seismic waves pass through magmatic liquid, and the amount of absorption of waves that occurs, researchers can acquire useful information about the physical nature of magmatic liquids.
