University work-study relief a possibility 1 r Possible federal funds rnay aid ailing departments By KELI OSBORN Of the Emerald Reduced federal funding for the University’s college work-study program has caused a decline in the number of students who can be offered work-study as part of their financial aid package, finan cial aid Director Ed Vignoul says. However, relief is in sight for University departments and other potential work-study employers, who are now facing a shortage of help, he adds. Vignoul says his office is seek ing supplemental funds from the federal work-study program and, if the past is any indicator, money probably will be awarded “The fact that we have 10 per cent fewer certified students this year is not the whole story,” he says. "It’s not really fewer stu dents, but fewer students for par ticular kinds of jobs.” One area suffering because of the shortage of work-study stu dents is departments' clerical help. Camille Brockman, supervisor for work-study placement, offers no explanation, except to say that the abundance of job offerings gives students a larger opportun ity to “pick and choose.” “ Students apparently prefer work experience closer to their major or career goals," Brockman says. “But clerical jobs are critical and should be valued,” she adds. The proportion of students of fered work-study who actually take jobs is higher than ever be fore, according to Brockman. "We have more people be cause the jobs are better," she explains. “We had more time this year to develop jobs and sell the program.” ‘ But it's also a part of the educa tional experience—that work BONG AND PIPE SALE 25% off any bong with this ad ■«vin a bong by guessing the right number 10 /»»/>> tl/l eu ua ti\ cuth link Lazar's Bazar HH6 Willamette Strict 687-9766 CHARTERS I Make reservations now... booking up fast. Brockman and Vignoul each credit the program's success to the placement center’s move to the campus branch of the state employment division. But both admit that success has created a gap between supply and demand by making more and more employers aware of the value of using work-study stu dents. “They know they'll get quality students. If they ask for a master's degree candidate, they’ll get one,” Brockman says. "We screen stu dents very carefully before send ing them out." Work-study job development includes going into the community to explain the program and inter viewing employers and prospec tive employees carefully to ensure that both understand what they are getting into, Brockman says. “We re advocates tor both em ployers and students. We try to match the two of them," she adds. The work-study program has two purposes, according to Vig noul. "ft provides the students with a job so they can earn the money that allows them to go to school.” Vignoul says work-study placement was contracted out to the employment office in August 1977 because the University re cognized the job could be done better.” Andy Young coming to town Andrew Young, the U.S. am bassador to the United Nations, will be the featured speaker at the Oregon Democratic Party s Wayne Morse Chair dinner at the Eugene Hotel, Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the uemocratic Heaoquaners. /uo Washington St., 345-7000, and are $10 for the general public and $7.50 for students and seniors.
