et al Student contest scheduled The National Student Educational Fund is sponsoring, the Better Information Project, Prizes in Education (BIPP1E), a national competi tion to encourage and recognize original student-produced informa tional materials. Each of the 12 best entries will receive $500 and a trip to Washing ton, D.C. Winners will then give their award money to the student organization or project of their choice. Individual students and student organizations are eligible to enter the competition. Application packets are available from the National Student Educa tional Fund, 2000 P Street N.W. Suite 305. Parks plan life-saving An advanced lifesaving class will be offered by Jefferson Pool at 8 — 10 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and at 7 — 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday beginning Oct 16. Instruction will include general water safety, boat safety, rescue, and aquatic first aid. Participants must be 15 years of age or older and be able to swim 500 yards continuously in deep water. The trip is planned to clean up fire rings and litter left by careless backpackers. The Forest Service has agreed to furnish pack horses and a wilderness ranger to help carry out debris. Interested persons should bring sleeping bags and warm clo thing for the overnight stay. There is a five to six mile hike to the park, and four to five hours will be spent clearing the site Saturday. Anti-nuclear speech planned Energy activist Lloyd Marbet will speak on "Energy Conscious ness: A Transition for Change,” Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the EMU, room to be posted. Marbet has been an oppo nent of nuclear power develop ment for ten years. Marbet has also been an in tervenor in the Trojan spent fuel hearings. His talk is sponsored by the Survival Center. At the same time, KAO issued an appeal to individuals, civic groups, schools, veterans, fraternal, businesses, churches, youth and men and women's clubs to come to its aid by helping to sell the Halloween candy during the annual fund-raising event. The Halloween packages contain 20 Sherbits candy 5-flavor rolls, with 30 boxes in each case selling for $2 apiece. If possible, people are asked to order in units of complete cases to facilitate handling. Individuals and organizations who want to help KAO are asked to send orders for candy to the Kidney Association of Oregon, 7008 N.
