Several faculty promoted
Several faculty members received promotions from their depart
ments and schools during spring term
Those promoted to full professor were Melvin Aikens, anthropol
ogy; Leslie Breidenthal, music; Philip Browning, education, Center on
Human Development; Bryan Downes, community service and public
affars; James Hoard, English and linguistics, Alan Hotter, mathema
tics; Stoddard Malarkey, English; Allen Sieradski, mathematics
Persons receiving promotion to associate professor, with indefinite
tenure, were Roderick Capaldi, biology; Sheldon Cohen, psychology;
lAchael Fish, Chinese and Japanese; Steven Goldschmidt, education.
Center for Educational Policy and Management; Robert Grudn, En
glish: Janes Koch, management; Mary Rothbart, psychology: Robert
Smythe, mathematics; Jerry Williams, speech; Charles Wifcinson, law.
Other promotions were Laird Kirkpatrick, law, to ful professor with
indefinite tenure; Ronald Sederoff, biology, to associate professor.
Christine Olson, Virginia Parr, and Ryoko Toyama, al ibrary. to assis
tant professor; and Sylvia Giustina, romance languages to seraor in

Gallagher joins LERC
The state Labor Education and Research Center (LERC) at the
University has added a third labor education specialist to rts staff. James
Gallagher, associate professor of labor education at the UCLA Center
for Labor Research for the past two years, wiH join labor education
specialist Scott Tobey and Center Director Emory Via as an associate
professor of labor education.
GaHagher, 44, has worked closely with the California labor move
ment for more than 10 years, according to Steven Deutsch, who has
been acting LERC director, and wrote several union training manuals
while at UCLA.
Gallagher will participate in several LERC programs ttxs summer
including a workshop on grievance administration and arbitration in
community colleges July 30 through August 2, and a workshop for
AFL-CJO central body officers and delegates Aug. 11-13
GaHagher and Via will attend a LERC dinner commemorating the
center s first year of service Friday, July 7, at the Rodeway Inn in

Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. is the opening of an exhtoit of the
Self-taught artists of the Lane County area." at the Lane County
Pioneer Museum, 740 W. 13th St. The exhibit was organized by Gary
Buckendorf, an artist-in-community with the Lane Regional Arts Coun
ci. There will also be a reception with the artists. The public is invited.
The exhibit wil run through July 30th.
