sports Nothing works for Oregon in Hawaii series HONOLULU — Even the weather took a turn for the worse. Expecting sun, Oregon’s baseball team was instead greeted with rain for the opening games of their season-ending series with Hawaii. On top of that, they lost three in a row. The Ducks, now 23-22 on the year, lost in nearly every way pos sible to the Rainbows, who are in need of wins to catapult them into the NCAA tournament. In the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, a late Oregon rally fell short and the Ducks lost 3-2, and in the nightcap they struck out 20 times and fell 9-1. Sunday, it wasn't much better, as Oregon lost 5-0 in a rain-delayed contest. The Ducks were closest in the season opener, as Dean Kegler held the Rainbows to three runs over seven innings. But his mates didn’t fare well at the plate, as Hawaii starter Rich Olsen baffled them for six innings before giving up two runs in the top of the seventh, when Ron Sloy and Kevin Tabler both had doubles. That was the only threat that the Ducks could muster, though, as Gene Smith came on for the save — helped by a missed suicide squeeze attempt by Mike Carr. In the second game, Oregon never got a chance. After giving up a run in the first inning, Derek Tatsuna settled down to hold the Ducks at bay for the final eight, whiffing 20 while walking only three. Meanwhile, the Rainbows got to starter Glenn Fisher, knock ing him for five runs in the third and and one more in the fourth before he was pulled for Don Mircovich —who himself gave up two runs in the fifth. Oregon continued to be puzzled at the plate in the rain game Sun day, managing only four hits to Hawaii’s eight. Rainbow starter Mark Olmos, who notched his seventh win against one loss, al lowed only one walk and fanned two in six innings. Hawaii got to starter Adam Ber lin in the first inning, when Rick Bass, son of former football player Dick Bass, was plunked by a Ber lin pitch and took second base on a ground ball. Curt Wantanabe singled for the RBI. The Rainbows added one more in the fourth, two more in the fifth, and one again in the sixth for the win. Oregon appeared to be breaking the shutout in the seventh, but a Tabler triple went unheeded as Carr and Glenn Baggerty were retired to end the game. The teams wind up the series with a doubleheader today.
