Photo by Steve Schneider Oregon shows little vs. Alums By STEVE JETT Of the Emerald Oregon football coach Rich Brooks hoped to use Saturday s scrimmage against the Alumni for getting some serious problem solving done. But after the Ducks struggled to a 10-7 win at Autzen Stadium, numerous items remained un answered. “I would like to play it again," explained Brooks afterwards, “I was looking for a heil of a lot more than I got today. We still have a lot of work to do.” Heading Brooks list of con cerns was finding his starting quarterback for the 1978 opener at Colorado. Unfortunately, Mike Kennedy and Dan Daly had trou ble fulfilling the leadership role Saturday. The two shared the duties over the afternoon and combined to complete only seven of 22 passes. "The unknown quality of this football team is not looking good, and that's the quarterback posi tion,' said Brooks, "I was hopeful I could come out of spring practice knowing who is the starting quar terback. But I do not know at this point.” For the record, Mitch Hanan s 20-yard field goal with four sec onds remaining provided the win. But until then, when opportunity came knocking for the Duck of fense, Oregon folded. In their opening drive, Oregon moved to the Alumni 26 where Mario Clark picked off a Kennedy pass. Late in the first quarter, Kennedy, a 1977 redshirt, moved Oregon 37 yards in five plays to the alunni 14. But a mixed-up handoff and Greg Milton's quar terback sack stagnated the drive, and Mike Babb's 40-yard field goal try failed. Finally, after alum Jack Henderson's pass was picked off by Mike Nolan and returned 36 yards to the 13, Oregon could only produce a 26-yard field goal by Hanan. "We got down there near the end zone a couple of times and made some bad plays by the quar terback," said Brooks. “I was dis appointed we could not put it in." Kennedy, who threw three in terceptions, eventually knew some of the trouble. "After I threw the first intercep tion, they knew I was going for the curls, so that is what they took away. I thought if we kept going there we could score, but I made to many mental mistakes." he said. Other than Hanan s two field goals, Oregon scoring consisted of two safeties. With 5:26 remain ing to play, Norval Turner was dragged down from behind by Scott Setterlund. Four minutes later, Roy Geiger dropped a snap from center while punting from his own end zone, and George Ver celli sent him down. Any movement on offense for Oregon came through their run ning backs, mainly sophomore Vince Williams. Williams, playing on one bad wheel, ground out 81 yards in nine carries, including a 35-yard romp during the winning field goal drive. “Vince had a badly bruised leg and was not at full speed," said Brooks, "but we decided to get him into the game. Despite 174 yards rushing, Oregon's running game outside was dormant. With tailback Ed Radcliff idle with an injury and Don Davis only in for two plays, Oregon had nothing to show in outside gains. Thus, explained Brooks, “the Alumni could jam the middle on us." Even though the Duck front line yielded minus 35 yards on the ground, the Alumni explored the Oregon secondary successfully through the first half. Turner headed the Alumni touchdown drive, moving the offense 65 yards in 15 seconds. After hitting Bob Palm for 55 yards, Turner found Johnny Kerr in the corner of the end zone for the score. “Defensively we had break downs in the cover during the first half, but did better in the second half." explained Brooks, as the Alumni quarterbacks were grounded for the last two quarters, picking up only 18 of the 174 total yards passing. The Alumni were granted one final attempt at victory when Bruce Jensen intercepted a side-line pass of Daly and bolted 36 yards for an apparent touchdown. Unfor tunately, the Alumni had 12 men on the field and the score was nul lified. The Ducks scored four runs in the eighth inning to move ahead of OSU in the standings, a full six games behind division champion Washington State. Tom Dodd led a 15-hit Duck barrage against four Oregon State pitchers, getting four hits in five trips to the plate including a doub le and a triple. Oregon jumped on Beaver ace Eric Sallee for eight runs and eleven hits in seven in nings. But the loss went to Bruce Plato, whom the Ducks touched up for four runs in only 2/3 of an inning of work. However, the Duck staff was far from immune to the same treat ment as the Beavers collected 14 hits. Oregon starter Glenn Fisher went only three innings in giving up eight hits and five runs. Kelly Richardson picked up the win, though he allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Freshman Dean Kegler picked up the save, work ing the last two frames, giving up three hits but no walks. Steve Elam cracked his ninth homer of the season in the Ducks' four run first.
