I Grandma wants death penalty restored SALEM, (AP) — The grand mother of an 11-year-old murder victim wants to see the death pen alty restored in Oregon. Elsie Pettingill, 53, Saiem, grandmother of Stephanie Newsom, has been circulating petitions to get a death penalty bill on the November ballot. More than 46,000 signatures are needed by July 7. The sponsors are Reps. Jack Sumner, D-Heppner; Bernard Byers, D-Lebanon; and Cecil Johnson, R-Grants Pass. The measure would allow a judge to sentence murderers to die in a gas chamber, the same method used when Oregon had the death penalty for 50 years be fore it was abolished in 1964. Pettengill is the mother of Carl Newson, father of Stephanie. The girl was abducted April 19 in West Salem. Her body was found eight days later on the Ankeny National CLASSIFIEDS PUCE YOUR CUSSIFIED AD AT EMERALD OFFICE 301 EMU EMU MAIN DESK UO BOOKSTORE STAMP COUNTER The rales are 10* per word tie Drat day copy It admitted and St per word each ooneecutvedayttie ad la run without change. She had been strangled. Police apparently have few clues on a suspect. “I spent all day Monday walking up and down streets in Salem and I got more than 70 signatures,” r Pettingill said. “Only three people turned me down." “I consider myself a Christian,” she said. “But I think the death penalty has to be put back in so our children will be safe and others won't have to go through what our family has the last few weeks.” “I’ve always felt the death pen alty should be used, and after Stephanie died my feelings were even stronger about it,” she said. Pettengill said she doesn’t be lieve the death penalty should be imposed for all murder. “THE AR9 IS NOTHING LESS THAN THE FINEST, MOST TRUTHFUL SOUND SPEAKER SYSTEM WE HAVE EVER HEARD OR MEASURED ..."
