Ducks rip OCE behind homer power By MIKE GRADY Of the Emerald Slamming out 12 hits, two of them homers and two of them doubles, the Oregon baseball team walked all over Oregon Col lege of Education, 7-3, Monday af ternoon at Howe Field. The Ducks, playing with an al tered line-up, had no trouble re cording their 22nd victory of the season. The Ducks have lost 19. “I didn’t go into the game with the idea of playing everybody,” explained Oregon coach Mel Krause about his juggled line-up. "I went into it with the idea of play ing people who should help out and play next year." "I wanted to see Mike Burke play first and I put Kevin Tabler at third for some more offense. Ron Sloy will be playing some outfield so I put him in right. And I put Mike Carr behind the plate to get some more offense there.” “After the way we played in Seattle over the weekend,” Krause said, “I’ve gotta start look ing at some different things.” One thing Krause watched which was different from the weekend, when the Ducks drop ped two of three games to Washington, was the way they jumped on top at the start. First inning singles by Mike Connelly, Tom Dodd, Tabler and Carr accounted for Oregon s i nitial two runs. Steve Elam, a third in ning replacement for Connelly, gave the Duck’s their third run in the fourth inning with a towering 400-foot homer to right-center. It was his eighth of the year. And in the fifth came the clincher. After opening the inning with walks to Sloy and Tabler, fol lowed by a base hit by Carr to load the bases, OCE starting pitcher Ray Cook was lifted in favor of John Harding. Oregon shortstop Glenn Bag gerly greeted Harding by lining one of his initial pitches 380 feet over the left field fence. The grand slam was Baggerty’s third home run of the season. Oregon pitcher Don Mircovich meanwhile was breezing his way through the OCE line-up. The right hander, who has spent the major ity of the year on the junior varsity, Softball team blitzes PSU By CHRISTY BODE Of the Emerald The Oregon women s softball team loves playing at home. They proved that yesterday at Amazon Field, working as a cohesive unit to blitz Portland State in a double header 4-0 and 2-0. The Ducks shined early in the first game, playing errorless ball. They scored three runs in the sec ond inning on two hits and two errors by PSU. Second baseman Allyson Smith went 2 for 2 and shortstop Kim Knox added two impressive RBI’s to give Oregon their victory in the first game. Vicki Lesh pitched a good game, allowing only one hit. During the break that followed the first game, Oregon coach Becky Sisley and assistant Doug McRea encouraged their team to win trie second game. Apparently, two teams in the regional meet this weekend must play extra games. By winning the second game, the Duck’s performance will affect the tournament seeding, and may possibly exempt them from playing any extra games. Team member Allyson Smith summed up the situation, Any thing can go in this league be cause SOC beat OCE and Port land State twice.” In the second game, Knox and Smith both hit two for three as Oregon scored two runs on seven hits, committing two errors. The highlight of the game oc curred in the bottom of the first inning when Smith hit a triple with Knox scoring from first base. The second and final run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fourth. ■sportfolio Soccer teams win two, lose one The Oregon men’s and women’s soccer clubs competed in three games over the weekend at Autzen Stadium. The men’s team beat Southern Oregon on Sunday by a 3-1 score, while the women split two games, losing Saturday to the Portland Highlan ders but defeating SOSC on Sunday. Bruce Beltz opened the OCE seventh with a single to left. A walk to Bruce Reece and then a single by Bill Miles put Wolverines on second and third. Jeff Petrovich followed with a grounder to short stop Jeff Heaton, who overthrew first base, bringing in both run ners. Mircovich struck out two of the next three batters to get out of the inning and earn the victory. Left hander Doug Strahm finished up the last two innings for Mircovich, allowing no hits although one run scored because of errors. Oregon plays host to Portland State today at Howe field at 3 p.m. before facing OCE again Wed nesday in Monmounth. Dean Kegler wi II be on the mound for the Ducks against PSU.
