Prof, students ‘deal’ with drugs PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Dr. Don Galpin solicits street drugs from around the country, but it’s all on the up and up. The associate professor of pharmacy at Washington State University is coordinator of the university’s street drug analysis laboratory. Students in Galpin’s classes have analyzed over 300 illicit drug samples annually for the past five years as part of their education. The lab gives students an idea of what is sold on the street and ‘Don’t buy books by crooks’ WASHINGTON (AP) — With posters and T-shirts as their weapons and “Don’t Buy Books by Crooks” as their battle cry, Tom Flanigan and Bill Boleyn are stick ing a low-budget needle in both the hyping and the price of Richard Nixon’s upcoming memoirs. “It just didn’t strike us as right that the-man who refused to give his tapes to the American people would turn around and sell a book for an outrageous price,” Flanigan said Tuesday. “You shouldn’t have to pay $20 to find out if he’s giving us another bunch of lies four years later." Flanigan, 26, and Boleyn, 29, founded the Committee to Boycott Nixon’s Memoirs with financial help from 17 friends who mutually claim that a man shouldn’t profit from his disgrace. “He's this country’s all-time celebrity crook,” says Boleyn, “and we want people to think about that before they go to the bookstore.” With the help from a small Washington ad agency, the com mittee hopes to make the non purchase of Nixon’s book, scheduled for release in mid-May at $19.95, a national fad. The group is taking out its own newspaper ads to coincide with the serialized excerpts of the memoirs, starting in 60 papers on Sunday, and is marketing T-shirts, posters and bumper stickers bear ing their principal slogan or varia tions such as “The Book Stops Here," and “Erase the Memoirs.” The committee operates out of a $100-per-month office in subur ban Arlington, Va., on an initial stake of $39,500. Flanigan, a part owner of a rug cleaning firm in Vir ginia, put in $4,000 and Boleyn, part owner of a downtown Washington bar and restaurant came up with $3,000. how to approach the drug prob lem, Galpin said. All correspondence with the col lege is confidential. Anyone who wishes to have an analysis done on a one-dose sample of any drug can send the sample to Galpin with a serial number from a dollar bill and within a week call the lab and learn the results of the analysis by identifying the serial number. Donors are asked to submit some information along with the drug. It helps students know what the drug is supposed to be, the physiological effects, the method of administration, the street value and where the drug was pur chased. Galpin said most of his “clients” are dissatisfied drug users who have been disappointed by the ef fects of a drug they purchased. “So we’re probably not getting a true representation of what’s re ally on the street,” he said. Many of the drugs received by the lab come from a similar lab at the University of Washington in Seattle. Others have come di rectly to Pullman fom as far away as Pennsylvania. A majority of the drugs tested turn out to be amphetamines or “speed," Galpin said. Cocaine samples have in creased recently, Galpin noted, indicating a rise in the popularity of the drug. He said most of the LSD samples examined in the lab have been genuine and most of the marijuana has been unadulter ated. The lab may soon be able to test marijuana for herbicide contami nation. “We re trying to get set up for paraquat analysis, but I’m afraid that if we do, we ll be swamped with requests,” Galpin said. “The drug culture thinks it’s great. Of course, some people think if drug users are going to break the law then let them take their chances, but no one has voiced any strong objections,'’ he said.
