sports Oregon faces Willamette today with good road swing under belt Oregon’s baseball team, fresh off a good road trip to California, will travel to Salem to battle Willamette this afternoon. The Ducks had a respectable 8-6 record on the trip, bringing their overall record to 9-8. Glenn Baggerly, Ron Sloy and Tom Dodd are the top Oregon hit ters at this stage of the season. Freshman Dean Kegler is the top pitcher thus far with a 3-0 record. The Ducks finished their trip with a split of two games. In the first game, Oregon fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 8-3 loss to St. Mary’s. In the second game, the Ducks bashed 18 hits on the way to a 12-9 win over Pacific. Against St. Mary’s, three Duck pitchers gave up eleven hits. However, only five of the eight runs were earned as the Ducks committed four errors. The Gaels improved their record to 19-12 with the win. Glenn Fisher’s re cord fell to 1-3 for Oregon. Oregon had better luck in the second game, played a few hours later in Stockton, sixty miles from the site of the first game. Women’s athletic teams land five top recruits Oregons womens basketball, softball, field hockey and track teams were ail strengthened over Spring Break with the landing of five top recruits. Irene Griffith, from Port Town send, Wash., is the national prep record holder in the two-mile with a time of 1025.4. Griffith also won the Seaside Marathon in 2:47, to place her among the top 15 marathoners in the world. The basketball team picked up some height with the acquisition of 6‘2” Claudia Eaton, the Most Val uable Player in the Central California Conference. Eaton was named to both the volleyball and basketball all-conference teams. Tabler also picked up two runs batted in, including a tie breaking double in the eighth in ning. Six other Oregon players re gistered two hits, including Jeff Heaton’s triple and single. Heaton also had three runs batted in. The game was highlighted by 12 extra base hits, eight of them by Pacific. There were 31 total hits in the game. Vic Kelley picked up the win for Oregon, despite giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief work. Oregon coach Mel Krause will probably choose between Adam Berlin and John Lazarich for the starting pitching berth in today’s game. Ducknetters win doubles to beat Washington State Oregon started its women’s tennis season in fine fashion Wednesday, beating Washington State 5-4 for the first Ducks win over the Cougars in two years. Helen Vozenilek and Patti Layton, Oregon's number one and two in singles, won both their matches, but it was the final dou bles match that clinched the match for the Ducks. Vozenilek was teamed with Tina Mickelson in the number two doubles, and provided the winning margin for Oregon. Down 2-5 to their opponents, the Oregon pair rallied in that second set to win 7-5 after winning the first set, 6-4. Other Duck winners were Deb bie Borchers in the number four singles, and Oregon’s top doubles team of Borchers and Layton in the number one pairs. The Borchers-Layton team won the NCWSA doubles title in 1976, but Layton did not compete in 1977. Oregon next faces Willamette on Friday, a team that Oregon handled rather easily last season, winning 9-0. The match will be held on the Salem campus at 3:30. Oregon softball loses two more CHICO, Calif. —Oregon’s soft ball team lost its fifth and sixth straight games on Tuesday, as Chico State beat the Ducks 3-0 and 3-2 Shawna Baxter lost the first game to Chico, giving up three runs and just five hits. Kim Knox and Vicki Lesh also gave up a total of three runs on four hits in the nightcap.
