Libertarians stress individualism By GREG WASSON Of the Emerald America's government has fos tered and strengthened the two major political parties. In places like Chicago, party control is seen by many as insurmountable. But, party inclination has not histori cally been a strong force in Oregon and people here like to think of themselves first as Oregonians and second as party members. The Libertarian Party would like to use that independence to make their numbers grow, accord ing to Lee Carey, vice-chairer of the state s party. Party looks for student support He says libertarian views should appeal to college students because of the freedom they allow. “You know, the rules in college are minimal and people pretty much get to do what they want. We feel that’s the kind of society we are approaching,” he says. Statewide, the party is fairly small, numbering around 300 or 400, but Carey says the problem is people haven’t heard about the Libertarian approach. “On a practical basis, it’s kind of a free enterprise and no censor ship. We allow all kinds of acts between consenting adults— in cluding capitalist acts.” The Libertarian Party stresses the individual wherever possible. According to Carey, as life be comes more complicated, indi vidualism becomes a better an swer. ‘The more complex a society becomes, the less practical a cen tralized solution is,” he says. Carey fears the party's ap proach to economics will turn off many college students tired of the free enterprise system. Using forestry as an example, Carey says the party feels people should be able to cut as long as there is a market for the lumber. “However, this does not lead, as most people assume, to deple tion of the resource. A person can make more money, sometimes, by holding resources rather than selling them,” he said. “We really don't know whether we’d have less or more trees if we allow private people to exploit the resources. One thing we do know, is that we’ll have enough trees,” says Carey. There is a campus group of Libertarians, but according to Uni versity chairer Chuck Hudson, this group is not associated with the national party. ‘ But, we do have their (the na tional party’s) literature, along with others.” He says the University Libertarians ' are not associated with any state or national organi zation.” The group usually meets every other Thursday, but the last meet ing for the term was held last week.
