Health questions answered Editor's Note: Three graduate students in health education who work at the University Student Health Center will answer your medical questions every other Wednesday in the Emerald. If you have a question you'd like answered con cerning you or your family's medical problems, just jot it down and send it in care of the health center or the Emerald. The University Health Center provides more than just medical care to its stu dents — it now offers the services of student consul tants and counselors. Three currently enrolled masters candidates work six hours a week to counsel students with conditions re quiring explanations before formal treatment is adminis tered or as a followup to medical treatment. Nurse Trudy Bernard provides information on personal and family health problems, special disease conditions, communicable diseases, skin conditions Drawing by Martha Lawson and general areas of pre ventative health care. Another counselor, Wil lette Rude, a nutritionist and diet therapist, offers guid ance in basic nutrition, re quired diet therapy princi ples, weight control and other special dietary restric tions. Family Planner Marsha Serling helps with basic family planning, birth con trol methods, veneral dis eases, pregnancy testing and preventive dental care. Interested students should call the appointment desk at 686-4441. The con sultants have regularly scheduled office hours. The ESC also keeps a file of individuals and groups that have expertise in various environment al areas. It makes three to five referrals a week, and the number is increasing. How does the referral service work? “For example,” Hamilton ex plains, "A woman...called last week about clear-cutting screwing up her water supply. The center gets about two writ ten and two verbal requests for course information per week, in cluding requests from other uni versities. It puts out a free catalog of environmental studies that lists environmental groups and courses related to the environ ment that are offered at the Uni versity. Outside the ESC is a bulletin board with notices about jobs in environmentally related fields, public meetings, conferences and public hearings. The ESC is located in Room 11, OLC, ext. 5006.
