sports Halberg, gymnasts record bests in weekend swing to California The Oregon women’s gymnas tics team scored a season high 128.85 points to finish second in a triangular meet, Friday night at Fresno, Calif. San Jose State won the com petition with a team score of 130 points. Fresno State brought up the rear with 98.65. Wendy Halberg led the way for the Ducks, getting her best score of the year in the all-around. Hal berg finished in second with 34.30 points behind San Jose’s Kris Kletfer, who scored 34.85. Hal berg won the uneven bars and vaulting, while Kletfer won the balance beam and floor exercise. Cindi Gleason got a personal high of 31.75 in the all-around, while Lorene Gamble got a lifetime best of 8.8 on the uneven bars. In a separate meet, Halberg placed sixth in the all-around competition of the Western Hemisphere Games, Saturday night at Hayward, Calif. Halberg and teammate Cindi Gleason, who finished sixteenth, were the only Oregon gymnasts entered in the 22 competitor event. Halberg finished with 33.50 points and Gleason has 30.75. The all-around title was won by Arizona’s Karen Christianson with a 35.20 score. Women’s swim team ends perfect dual year Oregon’s women’s swimming team completed their dual meet season without a mark Saturday, as they downed both Simon Fraser and Oregon State in Leigh ton Pool. The Ducks won by nearly iden tical scores, beating the Beavers 75-34 and Simon Fraser 77-34. The meet was the final tune-up for the NCWSA regionals to be held in Seattle next weekend. Kathy Hemmer and Michelle Menkens both had double wins for Oregon, with Hemmer taking first in the 500 Freestyle with a 5:20.70 mark, and setting a personal, Oregon, and Northwest record in the 200 medley with a 2:09.57 docking. Menkens won the 100 IM and the 100 butterfly. Men fall to Simon Fraser after taking an early lead Oregon came close to a big upset last Saturday, nearly de feating defending NAIA men’s swim champion Simon Fraser in a dual meet at Leighton Pool. Oregon led the meet by a slim four-point margin with three events remaining, but 1-2 finishes in the 100 freestyle and 200 breast stroke, along with a win in the 400 relay, game Simon Fraser the 65-48 win. All was not bad for Oregon, though, as Tack Goodell had his I all-time best in the 200 butterfly with a 1:59.49 clocking. Goodell finished second to Fraser’s Mark Hahto. Steve Hamilton was a double winner for the Ducks, taking firsts in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke. Hamilton edged Fraser’s Butch Batchelor in both races. Other winners for Oregon were Paul Buvick, with a 22.44 time in the 50 freestyle, and Jay Evans, who won the 100 free in 48.13. Rugby teams win Oregon's two rugby teams shutout their foes in action last Saturday at the IM track field. The first team used a running game to hammer Willamette 'University, 34-0. The second team employed the same game plan to beat Reed College, 24-0. Coach Ken Dovey said both teams showed excellent team work to gain the wins. The forwards and backs used hand-to hand passing throughout both games. Both visiting teams were treated to the traditional post-game party by the Duck squads. Ski-days scheduled The Corvallis Outdoor Environmental Program has scheduled a series of one-day ski trips which provide tours with others. The ski-day will be held this Thursday, Feb. 23.
