I Women learn radiant happiness By ANN TRENEMAN Of the Emerald The class members lowered their heads in prayer. The woman standing at the front of the class in Room 9, Colin Kelly Junior High School, bowed hers. “Dear Lord, I pray I will be able to teach this material so it is understood by these women....” The lesson for the night was “Sympathetic Understanding” and “Making our Husbands Number One." The women, seated in small desks, took out their notebooks and began diligently taking notes. Every Tuesday night for the next eight weeks, these 15 women will sit in Room 9 and take notes on understanding men, gaining deep inner happiness and be coming a domestic goddess. “This course brings an honor and a dignity to homemaking,” Janice Wicks, teacher of Fascinating Womanhood said. Femininity, radiant happiness, fresh radiant health and child-likeness are all components of the ideal woman from a man’s point of view according to “Fas cinating Womanhood.” The $15 class is inspired by the book “Fascinating Womanhood” by Helen Adelin. Wicks said, “The success in people's lives is what really sells this course. All the advertising in the world won't help you if the product isn’t good. "It’s the best answer I’ve come up with,” she added. When asked how her life changed after taking the course, she smiled, raising her hands over her head, “My husband’s income just started to go like this.” The course is billed as “A Guide to a Happy Marriage.” Wicks said, “Women take an honest look at how bad they want their marriages to work. It all de pends on if they want to play. If their answer is ’no,' that’s not what they want, then bunch it!” Wicks said women from “all walks of life” take the course, while divorced and single women enroll also. “Someone said to me once that it’s always the women who don’t need this course who take it.” She added unmarried women do benefit, because “I think they learn to think and become honest with them selves. They learn to be honest enough i U--_ ‘Wives key to husband’s success’ Photo by Grog QiwtowM Janice Wicks: “Make our husbands number one” to admit exactly where they were in their lives. “Look, they don't have to believe this,” she said, pointing to the book “Fascinat ing Womanhood,” but “what is it they want?” Wicks’s first contact with Fascinating Womanhood was a housework list handed to her by a friend who was taking the course. The list, a day-by-day breakdown of housework, is part of the course's material. “I just really needed some ideas of how to go about doing it. I used to just sit in my kitchen and bawl....” That was about fifteen years ago. “I have always been searching for someone who was leading a better life.... When I first took this course I de cided to take this material hook, line and sinker. If it didn't work, I had nothing to lose,” she shurugged. “When I first took the course,” Wicks said, “I asked myself how can I be creative....what can I do to help my hus band to like himself better so he can like me better? “I think it’s called synergetics' — if it’s not good for both of us, it's not good.” Wicks started to teach the course at Eugene’s First Baptist Church in 1970. She taught, it several times and then started to receive “some negative feed back" concerning the course's material. She said, "At that point I had to decide if I was willing to take the flack.” It took her two years to decide. “My friends would say things like Everyone I know who’s taken that course got a divorce’ I really had to believe in the material and get a firm foundation behind me to start teaching again. “I’m sort of a Pollyana, I'd rather stick my head in the sand than realize how far a lot of men have to go. But they have to change themselves. I’m responsible for myself...I find that’s quite enough,” Wicks said emphatically. A man “needs a sympathetic and un derstanding wife by his side," Wicks said at last Tuesday's class on the “pressing responsibilities of being a man.” Wicks quoted often from Genesis on a man’s desire and need for work. Later, a man spoke on his tasks of being a provider, husband and father. When asked how she felt about un married couples living together, Wicks said, “If you live together forever, then it’s no different from marriage. However, loyalty is essential. In a lot of cases in the end I think there is more grief than pleasure.” In addition to “Fascinating Woman hood," Adelin has written a book for un married women called “Fascinating Girl,” which discusses how to be the kind of woman a man adores and basically how to attract men.
