Another Elvis rocks English rock and roll star Elvis Costello brought his brand of music - not “punk" but “new wave" rock and roll to the Lane County Civic Auditorium Thursday night. The 22-year-old musician has a large following in England and because of a recent advertising campaign his career is blooming in the United States. About 400 people at the civic auditorium heard Costello perform his hits including, “The Angels Wanna Wear my Red Shoes." Pre’s trail light poles vandalized Efforts to light the way for joggers along Pre’s Trail have been stalled by vandals who damaged three newly installed light poles during the weekend, Mike Dooley landscape architect for the Lane County Parks and Open Spaces Department, says The poles were bent to the breaking point, Dooley says, and will have to be replaced. The lighting poles are part of a program to up-grade the trail for the estimated 100 000 yearly joggers who use it. The Lane County Parks and Open Spaces program, with the aid of the Steve Prefontaine Foundation engineered the project to place nearly 90 lights along a two-mile stretch of the trail The Prefontaine Foundation raised $10,000 last year during a campaign to make the four-mile trail more accessible after dark and combined that money with federal matching funds to pay for the $30,000 project. Although the lighting project was set to begin late last year, 16 of the 12-foot high poles weren't installed until last week Dooley explains. “We were just surprised that this happened before we even got the project done,” he says. The vandals may be young people, because no adult would do any damage to the trail, Dooley says. “Pre s trail is kind of a sacred cow in this city. Student detained after accident A University student was detained in Bend on charges of negligent homocide Sunday night, following an accident in which the car he was driving hit a snowbank and overturned, killing the onlv passenger. 7 Dawn Marie Otten, 23, of Route 1, Box 18, Yoncalla, was killed in the 7 p.m. accident Mark Lance Cramer, 21, of 2026 1st St., Springfield, was dnving the vehicle, which overturned on Highway 372 about 18 miles west of Bend. The two were returning from a skiing outing at Mount Bachelor According to Deschutes County Sheriff's reports, Cramer was released on $150 bail about 1 a.m. Monday morning. A representative from the Deschutes County District Attorney’s office said the office had yet to receive the police report on the fatal accident. As of Thursday, no formal charges had been pressed and no arraignment date set Crameris a junior majoring in business at the University.
