film Olympic film shows on campus By BRIAN CHAPMAN For the Emerald “Games of the XXI Olympiad,” the official film of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, has its Eugene premier this Sunday, Feb. 5, at 7 and 9:30 p.m. in 150 Geol ogy The documentary film runs two hours and is in full color. The sound was recorded live in stereo, thus authentically recreating the atmosphere of the Olympics. The National Film Board of Canada used 168 persons, includ ing 30 cameramen and 23 sound engineers, to produce the film. It was released in Europe a few months ago and received rave re views, according to the dis tributors. The movie manages to recreate the magic of the Games by con centrating on the human aspect. The producer, Jacques Bobet, defined one of the main aims of this collective work. “A new hero, man, is to emerge from the athlete’s impetus, disillusion and behavior differences.” Thus, many portraits are finely outlined, as well as portraits of the trainers and all those others who hover in the wings of the Games. “I wanted an intimist film. To fol low a few athletes. Catch them in their ordinary behavior in order to understand them better and try to transmit this feeling to the spec tator,” said Jean-Claude Labrec que, director. The medal-winning perfor mances of gymnast Nadia Com aneci, decathlete Bruce Jenner and swimmer Kornelia Ender are highlighted. However, there is also footage devoted to the triumphs and disappointments of lesser-known athletes. The distributors claim this film to be a "masterpiece of the documentary” and “as exciting as the original event—a must for sports lovers.” The showing of “Games of the XXI Olympiad” is sponsored by Phi Epsilon Kappa, a group of physical education students whose aims include the attracting to campus of outstanding speak ers and films in the area of physi cal education and sport. Admission to the film is $1.
