Ducks rebound after streak ends By BARRY BREEDE Of the Emerald Hospitality can only last so long for visiting teams as far as the Oregon gymnastic team is con cerned. Saturday night the University of New Mexico found just how long, as the Flying Ducks pinned an easy 217-208.6 victory over the outmanned Lobos. The Oregon victory came after a tough loss Friday to a flashy Arizona State team in one of the season’s best meets. The injury-plagued Lobos, with three of their top gymnasts unable to compete, realized how hard it is to battle the nation’s number three ranked team. Especially when your opponent has had a win streak of 25 snapped the night be fore. Using three individual-event wins by Mark Knupp, the Ducks never looked back on the Lobos. Knupp opened up with a 9.35 vic tory in the floor exercise and con tinued his domination by sweep ing both the high bar and vault. Knupp, however, was not alone in his winning efforts as his team mates also found the groove. Although the victory over UNM was fine for the Ducks in terms of the win column, the “real" meet as far as Flying Duck follow ers were concerned occured 24 hours earlier against ASU, as the Sun Devils slipped past the Ducks for a 219.10 to 218.05 vic tory. Living up to its billing as one of the most dynamic teams in the na tion, ASU used some true razzle dazzle along with a steady per formance from its top gymnast Scott Barclay to pull out the come-from-behind victory. After taking an early lead in the floor exercise competition, thanks largely to the inventive moves of Gary Rust (9.5) and Steve Economides (9.35), the Sun De vils slipped behind the Ducks in the side horse which followed. With the nation’s number one side horse man Tom Truedson (9.7), the Ducks were able to capture the first place honors in the event with ease. Although the Ducks still owned a slim eight-tenths of a point lead coming out of the side horse, the remaining four events showed the Sun Devils’ strengths. Even though the Ducks did come out on the short side of the team score, the meet was not without several superb perfor mances by Duck competitors. Both Truedson and McEldowney continued their national supre macy in the side horse and rings respectively. McEldowney used his combination of strength, flexi bility and imagination to set a school record of 9.7 in the rings. Both women were very successful while at Oregon, taking their teams to national appearances. Both quit in order to pursue academic interests.
