EMU room schedules draw criticism By CAROLYN BEAVER Of the Emerald Several ASUO program members aren’t happy with the way EMU administrators schedule rooms for events, says Michael Connelly, ASUO administrative assistant for Programs and University Affairs. Dorine Duval, EMU scheduling officer, now arranges all EMU room requests. “Room to be posted’’ i5 a familiar phrase since rooms are not assigned until 4:30 p.m. the day before an event. Some prog ram members feel the policy is not accept able because they “have hassles trying to schedule events to get publicity,’’ Connelly savs. "Say a group wanted to bring Jerry Rust in to speak on the 27th of January," says Connelly. “If they put in a reservation on the 16th. there still is the possibility of being bumped. They can't very well start doing any advertising," says Connelly. Publicity is not the only problem students face when scheduling rooms. Connelly doesn't “feel we re being dealt with suppor tively.” He says he thinks it all comes down to why the EMU exists; “It s a student union, but should it be run by administrators for students or by students themselves?" Janet Gillaspie, Survival Center director, says it’s the “classic “students are idiots trip. I can go to city hall and schedule rooms easier. But in a building I support with my incidental fees, I can t even get the room I want half the time.” Gillaspie circulated a petition the “major ity of the ASUO program directors signed,” asking for a policy to allow rooms to best suit their needs and groups to publicize specific rooms for the Eugene community. Although Gillaspie says the policy "cuts down accessiblity to Eugene and Spring field” residents, EMU Director Adell McMil lan feels it suits everyone’s needs most events. “The same issue came up last year and we took a thorough look at it. In our estima tion, it gives the most flexibility to all users of the EMU,” McMillan says. McMillan says if they assign rooms in advance, they wouldn’t have the flexibility to assign the most appropriate rooms. She says under the current system, most people get the rooms they want. Even though Gillaspie thinks students are “responsible enough people to assess their needs (for rooms) better than Dorine. all scheduling still comes from the adminis trative office. "Adelle doesn't thinkwe understand the full philosophy behind the policy, so she doesn't think there is a problem. Obviously, when most of the program directors sign a petition, there’s a problem,” says Gillaspie. McMillan feels the “room to be posted” is no problem for most people. “When you go to other public buildings, they all have boards or directories that give room loca tions,” she says. "We posted four additional schedules in obvious places and labeled them Daily Schedules,’ ” she says. NANCY ESTES: Congrats little sis!
