...et al Bike citations avoidable Beginning today, campus security personnel will issue citations on unregistered and illegally parked bicycles. This week, however, a citation on an unregistered bicycle can be voided if the owner registers the bicycle at the Campus Security Office in Straub Hall within 10 days after receiving the citation. After this week, bikes will be impounded if they are not registered. Bikes that are impounded, illegally parked or not registered merit a $2 fine. Impounded bicycles will be released only upon payment of the $2 and proof of registration. Illegally parked bicycles will be fined because of the safety hazard they present, says Richard Tanner, supervisor of campus security. Parking violations include blocking a doorway, ramp or sidewalk, and parking in the lobby or hallway of a building. Additional bicycle parking information may be obtained from the security office. Bicycles may be registered with either the University or the City of Eugene to be considered properly licensed by both authorities. According to Tanner, bicycles are less likely to be stolen and easier to identify and recover if they are registered. He estimates that 90 percent of the bicycles stolen on campus in the past were unregistered and unlocked. Approximately 2,000 bicycles have been registered free with cam pus security, but an unknown number of students with bikes have yet to license them.
