sports Ducks host powerful Hoosiers in swim meet By MARK STEWART Of the Emerald The University of Oregon Men’s “Aqua Duck” swim team could look more like sitting ducks this weekend as they face the highly talented, highly-ranked Indiana Hoosier swim team in the I Oregon-Indiana Invitational meet at Leighton Pool this weekend. Dr. James Counsilman, Hoosier coach since 1958, has been very, very successful. Dur ing his tenure, Counsilman’s squads have lost but six dual meets and only two since 1960. His teams have not surrendered the Big-10 swim title since 1961 and have won six national champ ionships. Anchoring the Hoosiers is Brazilian sophomore Djan Mad ruga, expected to be the next of a long string of great swimmers out of Indiana, that includes Mark Spitz. Like Spitz, Madruga is an 1 ACU-I CHESS TOURNAMENT Tuesday - Jan. 17th Wednesday - Jan. 18 4:00 P.M. Two juniors, Rick Hofstetter and Brazilian Romulo Arantes, should also score well. Hofstetter finished fourth in the 200-meter breast stroke at the national collegiate meet last year and was a member of the winning medley relay team. Arantes also won the 100 back stroke at the World University Games last summer. Oregon Coach Rich Schleicher calls the two swimmers "tremendous.” Indiana also has a high school All-American in freshman Chuck Sharpe, whom Schleicher noted was the best high school sprinter in the county last year. Schleicher admits that the Ducks have “no chance to beat Indiana.” He added few teams in the country have a chance of beat ing Indiana. According to Schleicher, the only probably bright spot for the Ducks will be senior Steve Hamil ton. “The backstroke and individual medley events will be the closest we can come to them with Hamil ton,” Schleicher said. “He will give it a championship try.” Schleicher said qualifying entry times for the events were set pur posely high to attract a maximum number of top-flight entrants. Getting Indiana to come to Eugene to compete with the Ducks was Schleicher’s doing. There was a method to his mad ness, though. “If we’re going to compete in anything, we’ve got to prepare for someone who’s good. We can al ways pull ringers—the big names — I want to expose the team to good teams,” said Schleicher. Help with recruiting and a top flight schedule are the reasons Schleicher wanted to bring In diana out west. The meet will begin Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., and con tinue Saturday at 1 p.m. Women try to qualify The University women s swim team, behind its trio of nationally ranked standouts, will set out in hopes of AIAW qualifying times in other events this weekend in the Oregon-lndiana Invitational. Led by Kathy Hemmer, Michelle Menkens and Tama Cuddeback, the women will be in search of top times in the 200 medly and 200 freestyle relays. Coach Virginia Van Rossen will be putting to gether her top teams for those races in hopes of qualifying for the national meet, held later this year. Hemmer’s time of 4:36.88 in the 400 individual medly was the fourth fastest clocking by a col legiate swimmer through the end of the year. Cuddeback was ranked sixth in the 200 breast stroke and Menkens 12th in the 100 freestyle. The women will compete in an open meet against AAU swim mers Friday night and will host Central Washington on the sec ond day. -sportfolio-— Cross-country ski race Sunday Two cross-country ski races will be held Sunday at noon at Little Odell Butte, on Highway 58 at the Willamette Pass. The races are of five and 10 kilometers, with the course being over a prepared track. For more information contact Sugar Pine Ridge, 877 E. 13th in Eugene or phone 345-5584.
