I went to my doctor for this patchy brown rash and he called it Tinea and gave me a lotion to put on it. My Latin class says Tinea means worms. Puzzled. Dear Puzzled: If you studied enough worms in your Latin class you would eventually come to nngworm which m medi cal parlance is Tinea What I would like to know is why you were reading about worms in your Latin class. Tinea is the general name for superficial fungual infections of the skin Tinea Versicolor, which is what you had. is the pretty name of a delightful disease. The skin affected forms scaly round patches of vary ing hues; sometimes it is white: sometimes it is brown; sometimes it is red If you shine filtered ultra-white light on the skin, the patches turn a psychedelic flou rescent gold The infections are not at all dangerous, are pain less, and the interesting colors and patterns may amaze you when exhibited with a filtered ultra-violet light The organism that bestows this remarkable gift is a fungus whose moniker is "Mallassezia Furfur" He lives the world over but only on human skin For unknown reasons, possibly genetic, only some peo ple have the ability to harbor this innocent artist, but those who can give him a home can often extend the invitation many times. Young adults are Mallassezia's preferred host, so, often a person through no fault of his own will lose the ability to acquire this colorful guest as he grows older The skin of the chest and back have the most ideal dimate according to a poll of one clinic's Mal lassezia. The palms of the hands and soles of the feet are positively uninhabitable. That nasty lotion the doctor gave you was prob ably Selsun lotion. The selenium sulfide it contains makes living intolerable for creative creatures like Mallassezia. Likewise you needn't worry about spreading your Mallassezia to those around you. Most people are so lacking in skin sensitivity that Mallassezia simply dies of boredom and lack of esthetic appreciation. Dear Dr Copperman: I had some painful blisters on my penis. The doctor told me I had Herpes Is it contagious? Unwillingly celibate Dear Unwilling: I will discuss Herpes at length in a future column. Briefly, Herpes is a virus, which is essentially a sub microscoptc bit of D.N.A wrapped in some protein. When it breaks out it is present in the skin and in the fluid of the blister. When the blister heals and disappears there is no longer any risk of transmitting the infection until the next occurrence which may be months or years later A reasonable approach is to wear a condom during intercourse at the first sign of a blister and until the blister has completely healed over and the scab has fallen off In addition, it is wise to wash with soap and water the entire area prior to intercourse When you are free of the blisters you do not need to worry about spreading the virus. Terry Copperman, M.D. Copyright 1977 Abstainees suffer from smokers If you're like most Americans, you don t smoke cigarettes Cur rently, only one adult out of every three is still using tobacco Among the population as a whole, non smokers outnumber smokers four to one the student body KATHY CRAFT Of the Emerald Perhaps you assume that as long as you yourself don't smoke, you're safe from the noxious ef fects of tobacco on your body. Un fortunately, you're wrong Con sider the following facts: No matter how energetically a person smokes, approximately two thirds of the smoke from a burning cigarette enters the sur rounding environment instead of the smoker's lungs. Certain studies indicate sidestream smoke contains iwice as much tar and nicotine as mainstream smoke, three times as much 3-4 benzpyrene (a compound sus pected as a cancer-causing agent), five times as much carbon monoxide and fifty times as much ammonia It's not surprising, then, that when you inhale second hand smoke your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises and the level of carbon monoxide in your blood increases. (Incidently, three hours after non-smokers leave a smoke filled room, half of the ex cess carbon monoxide is still in their bloodstream.) Sidestream smoke also con tains greater concentrations of cadmium than mainstream smoke. Exposure to cadmium is associated with hypertension, chronic bronchitis and em physema. Research indicates respiratory illnesses are twice as common among children whose parents smoke as compared with the offspring of non-smoking parents. Approximately two million Americans are sensitive to to bacco smoke and suffer smoke caused asthma attacks. Of course, in addition to the fact that second-hand smoke is harm ful to your health there's another simple truth — it reeks. And it is an odor that clings to the human body and lingers. Certain chemicals in the tobacco called ketone and al dhydes produce the offensive odor; the tar adheres them to your skin, hair and clothing. Most smokers are literally insensitive to these odors, for tobacco smoke long ago impaired their sense of smell. What options are open to non smokers who are sick of cigarette pollution? First of all, the next time a smoker asks Do you mind if I smoke?" as s/he confidently reaches for a cigarette, assert j your rights and answer in the af firmative. Always request seating in the non-smoking sections of re staurants. Ask your doctor and dentist to restrict smoking in their waiting rooms. If curtailing smok ing at meetings is totally infeasi ble, suggest a "one cigarette at a time" rule instead. And support legislation to prohibit smoking in public places ar at least establish non-smoking areas.
