SC wins AIAW title Spikers lose, but have good time at nationals AUSTIN, Tex. — Being thrown into the tire is having to face a national defending champion in your very first game of a national tournament. And that is exactly what happened to Oregon's vol leyball team as it was eliminated in the first round of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national tournament that concluded here Satur day night. The Ducks got up for their opening round game Thursday morning at 9 a m. to find themselves facing UCLA, last year's champs, and went down in flames, 15-1. 15-3. "It's a pretty tough task at that time in the morning,” said Oregon coach Karla Rice. "We weren t quite ready for them We did better in the second game and quit standing still, but their experience was overwhelming.” In what turned out to be a friendly California neigh borhood championship, the Bruins lost 15-6, 14-16, 15-5 to Southern California, who won their first-ever national title The Ducks went on to win their second game in pool play over Ohio State, 15-10,1015,15-13, in their only win of the tourney. Rice's squad then dropped a 10-15,15-13, 15-3 contest to Houston and was eliminated. “Ohio State was a team similar in talent to us," re marked Rice. “That region hasn't been real strong in volleyball, but they’ve picked up from last year. It was a real tight game." In competition Friday, Oregon lost to Alabama 15-10, 17-15 and dropped a three-set decision to Lamar, 15-7, 12-15, 15-6. Overall, Rice thought her team played well in all but one game "Everybody did extremely well, although we didn't r emerald sports V J come up with as good of a record as we wanted,” said the coach. 'Alabama was the only game that we didn't have a strong effort." And the southern California dominance? In an area where volleyball is a mandatory activity on the beach, experience became the key. "They have super exposure to volleyball down there," explained Rice, whose teams have qualified for a national berth every year since 1 Sf71. "Southern Califor nia has four members of its team who were members of the Adidas Junior team that finished first in (United States Volleyball Association) USVBA play. They (SC) weren't particularly tall, but they had a real quick offense.” Oregon will lose seven seniors from this season's team — Kimmie Gotchy, Elayne Logan, Robbyn Min tenko, Susan Ota, Peg Rees and Kathy Young. And while they didn’t take the title, the Ducks enjoyed the trip to the Lone Star State, nonetheless. "People went out of their way to be hospitable down there," said Rice. "It rained a good ole Texas shower one of the days, but the sun was nice the rest of the time.” Hamilton shines in All-Around swim meet Oregon s Steve Hamilton chalked up 360 points, 40 more than his nearest competitor, to win men s individual honors at the two-day Oregon All-Around swim meet over the weekend at Leigh ton Pool After winning two races Friday, the 500-meter freestyle and the 200 individual medley, the junior tanker continued to lead the field Saturday by finishing first in seven out of nine events The women’s all-around title was won by Michelle Menkens, who came back after a slow start Friday to win four first-places and three second-places on Saturday. In diving, Oregon s Sam Nixon took the men's one-meter event by piling up 290 points and finished second on the three meter board. Borowiak wins Rainier SEATTLE (AP) — Unseeded Jeff Borowiak disposed of hometown hero Tom Gorman 6-4, 7-6 Sunday in the finals and won the Rainier Seattle Tenms Classic without having lost a set against four opponents. Borowiak, 27, of Berkeley, Calif., raced through Charles Pasarell, Marty Riessen, Rod Laver and Gorman during the tournament. In the doubles final, Riessen and Gorman beat Pasarell and Ray Moore, 7-5, 7-6. The singles championship was worth $6,000 to the winner, while the doubles winners split $2,000. Gorman, 30, an All-American at Seattle University, had defeated Roy Emerson and Peter Fleming to reach the finals. But Gorman had his own service to contend with as well as his opponent. Gorman had problems on first service, especially on crucial points, and also served six double faults in the one hour, 20 minute match. Borowiak broke service in the first game in each set. "I'm happiest with this win, although I played a better match against Laver," Borowiak said. Gorman praised Borowiak. "He made a lot of passing shots and served consistently," Gorman said. “I didn't get in my first serve. When you are losing, you are pressing When winning you are more fluid." r . n Baltimore smashes Buffalo 58-20 to win close American East title Simpson wins 4th rushing title with 1,503 yds. BALTIMORE (AP) — Quar terback Bert Jones tossed three touchdown passes and the Baltimore defense set up 34 points on six turnovers as the Colts crushed the Buffalo Bills 58-20 and won their second consecutive National Football League division title Sunday. By winning the American Conference East with an 11-3 record, the Colts earned the dubious honor of opening the playoffs at home next Sunday against on-rushing Pittsburgh. The Steelers, seeking a third straight Super Bowl champ ionship, have won their last nine in a row. O.J. Simpson, who won his fourth NFL rushing title in five seasons, gained 171 yards on 28 carries, including a 44-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Simpson, who entered the game nine yards behind Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears, finished the season with 1,503 yards after gaining a whopping 647 in his last three games. Payton gained only 49 against Denver, finishing at 1,390. The Blls wound up at 2-12 after losing their 10th straight.
