Lyn don Johnson. McCarthy bolted the Democra tic Party three years ago and he is now seeking the presidency as an independent candidate. Taking a liberal stand on issues dealing with the environment, civil liberties and the economy, McCarthy is struggling to get his name placed on the ballot in many states, and has succeeded in Oregon. Some political analysts have suggested the McCarthy cam paign in Oregon will lure votes from the Carter camp and swing the state's presidential vote in favor of Ford. State Democratic Chairer James Klonoski discredits this no tion, saying the McCarthy cam paign will have a minor effect on the race. Republican State Chairer Steve Young expressed similar senti ments, saying he expected McCarthy to pull between five to eight per cent of the Oregon pres idential vote. Both Klonoski and Young ag reed that McCarthy will take more votes from Carter than from Ford. Moy estimates McCarthy will receive nearly fifteen per cent of the vote. But he says numerous variables, such as whether Ford or Carter make political blunders in the next two weeks and whether McCarthy receives additional financing, could influence the fig ure. Willy Hart, Lane County coor dinator of the McCarthy cam paign, was also optimistic. He predicted that McCarthy will “take no less than twelve per cent of the vote in Lane County.” When asked if he thought the McCarthy campaign will take votes away from Carter, Hart said he didn’t “se McCarthy as taking anybody’s vote.” He said most of the people who will vote for McCarthy are people who would not have voted otherwise. Hart admitted McCarthy has no chance of winning the election, but he said, “Winning is getting an independent party together and McCarthy is the vanguard of the movement.” Rhonda Bishop, chairer of the McCarthy campaign for Lane County, said most people working for McCarthy “believe there is no chance of winning.” When asked why she was working for McCar thy, Bishop said, “I don’t feel I should have to go along with everybody and vote for someone that I don’t believe in just because they’re going to win.” Bishop also perceives the McCarthy campaign as a means to establish a new party. “Its almost impossible to run for President when a person is not highly esteemed by the Democra tic or Republican party," Bishop said as she explained her opinion of one problem inherent in the present system.
