Of the Emerald
The Career Planning and Placement Service offers a variety of
services relating to employment opportunities and career planning for
both University students and alumni Assistance in choosing a career or
second career and setting up a placement file to send to prospective
employers are a few of the helpful aids the office provides.
The mam office of Career Planning and Placement is located in
Room 246 of Susan Campbell Hall. Receptionists are on hand to give
students the information they need or refer them to a capable staff
member.
Current information on career opportunities in various fields is on
hand in the Career Information Center in the office. The center contains
a collection of materials for researching the numerous alternatives
available to the individual based on age, education, experience and
desired hfe style.
Students who are interested in exploring self-awareness of abilities
and values and opportunities in the world of work are encouraged to
enroll in Counseling 199, offered through the office. Any University
student can sign up for the course at the Counseling Department table
dunng registration
Non-credit workshops are held throughout the year. Students can
sign up for the career-related workshops on resume writing, job search,
job interview and placement file preparation in the Career Planning and
Placement office
The Career Planning and Placement Center can help the student
establish a placement file If a non-education major plans to have
recommendations sent to prospective employers, the file will allow them
to have personal data and recommendations forwarded under one
cover
Education majors are encouraged to establish their placement files
with the Career Planning and Placement Service several quarters pnor
to graduation.
Packets of materials to set up placement files are available in
Room 246 of Susan Campbell Hall
Interviews with recruiters are easily set up for graduating students
who have resumes. Most interviews are held during fall and winter
terms. School administrators (for education majors) usually interview
between the months of March and May
Job openings in all fields are posted in the lobby of the Career
Planning and Placement office Current state, county, and city civil
service openings as well as applications for state and some counties
are available at the office as well.
The Law School Placement Service at the University offers assis
tance to law students seeking positions with law firms, accounting firms
or securing judicial seats.
Employers call into the service at 351 Law Center and cards are
posted with the particular openings. Law firms and accounting firms
conduct interviews in October and early November. Interviews are
conducted for third year students who will be ready for employment one
year later.
Openings for the Oregon Supreme Court and Court of Appeals are
also posted. Information on different bar requirements for different
states as well as literature on federal government and legal career
opportunities are available to students during office hours, 8 a m. to 5

New students often have the
misconception that the bookstore
is the only place to purchase texts.
They are wrong
Three other bookstore outlets,
The Book and Tea Store, Smith
Family Bookstore and The Id carry
a wide selection of class text
books as well as other related
reading materials.
The Book and Tea Store, lo
cated at 1646 East 19th Avenue,
will be carrying text books for ele
ven classes this term. Unfortu
nately, fall term will be the last time
that texts will be available. The
owners, Patricia Tubb and Mary
Faust attribute this to the rising
postal costs and ten percent stu
dent discount which virtually
consumes most of the low profit
margin inherent to school orders.
However, a fine assortment of
texts will be on hand for fall.
The Id, located at 1340 Alder
Street was the first store to offer
the ten percent student discount.
It is also the oldest independent
book store in the area. This term
the Id will handle the reading re
quirements for approximately
eighty classes. They also carry a
few used books, but are quite re
strictive in this aspect due to li
mited space.
The Smith Family Book Store,
located at 1233 Alder Street does
not carry new text books, but they
offer perhaps the largest supply of
used paperback texts.
This bookstore is anticipating a
move in early 1977, and will be
relocated at 758 East 13th Street.
