GEISER \ | Well, it's about time Ambrosial Adventures took a side trip from the usual fare and made a tribute to the "buycentennial.” Presidents have come and presidents have gone, but they all manage to leave behind traces of their influence. One such leftover is recipes. Of course, we all nostalgically re member Al Smith s famous Salt Peter Pot Roast — he just never could get up there. Or Hubert Humphrey s favorite, Prune Pie — he's always running. If their culinary delights don’t strike you, remember George McGovern's fateful flavor ful fare — eating crow? Perhaps these culinary treats aren't as impressive as George Washington's cherry pie, but the following recipe is guaranteed to make you stomach turn and your head spin. Water Cake or All the President's Menues 1 Cream Howard Hunt and add Colson, beating until fluffy. 2. Carefully mince Haldeman, dice Erlichman and beat with Hunt and Colson. 3. Then, over low heat, saute Dean until juicy and repeat on other side 4 Now just fry Nixon over easy 5 Fold steps three and four into previous mixture, adding your favorite vices. 6 Pour into a greased White House and bake for four years This recipe takes time and is fairly expensive, but the result is a rich Woodsteiman flavor Some of the ingredients's tastes are locked in, while others aromas manage to escape. I was well on my way before I discovered The Orig inal Pancake House, at 659 E. Broadway, but that particular es tablishment has afforded my mania a good deal of satisfaction. Still, my craving has not rendered me indiscriminate, and nothing will convince me to leave a re staurant sooner than a misman aged pancake. I will not visit it again; I will not even stay through the first round. At 'The Original,' I stayed the first round and then some. “Why, why,” the uninitiated murble into their overfried eggs and leaden flapjacks. I enumer ate: The menu boasts selections from around the world, and whether you decide to tour with the Hawaiian, German, or Manda rin pancakes or feel more at home with the traditional buttermilk, you've no need to fear disap pointment. In addition, the prices are pleasantly moderate (espe cially considering your goal, i.e., pancake bliss). They run from $1.25 for the Buttermilk to $3.50 or so for the Large Apple Pancake which feeds two. Don’t mistake that price-range for a choice bet ween a half-full stomach and a full one, though; you can use any of them to do the job. The choice lies in how to do it. How to do it: the Apple Pancake is an eggy batter that puffs up be cause it’s baked and is covered with thin apple slices coated with a cinnamon glaze that sort of oozes butter — I tremble to see it before me; the Mandarin Pancakes are crepes wrapped about mandarin orange slices with an orange sauce — I fell my will begin to crumble; or the 49'er Flapjacks that are thin, chewy, and gooey; oh, yes, the Buttermilk that melt; the baked omelettes that run ODEODEODEODEODE COMING! Add ail the other breakfasty-type accouterments that taste good at any time of the day, from sausage to fruit juice and your breakfast bliss is as sured. review For those who share my mania for good pancakes or those plan ning on developing the fixation, the Original Pancake House is open 6 a.m. (plenty of time before class) to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings are crammed, but they manage good service re gardless. When they see me through the window crossing to ward the door, they check to see that the tea water is boiling, and no doubt wonder what I plan to lose myself in today. the mette Orders to go!
