... and brief asides Sufi center presents film A day-long celebration of joy, unity and the search for inner a wareness will be held Sunday, at the Community Center for Per forming Arts, 8th and Lincoln. Featured will be Sunseed, a full length color film which explores in sight and sound the meditation, philosophy, and spiritual practices of many of the foremost leaders of the present day spiritual awaken ing, with soundtrack by the Sufi Choir. Sunseed was made by a group of young filmmakers and artists who spent a year in India, Nepal, Israel, and the United States talk ing with teachers, gurus, and dis ciples. This was done in an effort to capture on film the search for inner truth that thousands of young people were/are going Blakey brings 'message' ine message or jazz win do brought to campus Saturday, when Art Biakey appears at 8 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom. Drummer Biakey is a sort of jazz institution. He formed the Jazz Messengers in 1947 and although the personnel has altered over the years. Biakey s influence has not. Among the graduates of the Biakey school of hard-driving rhythmic potency and muscular conceptions are Donald Byrd, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Chuch Mangione, and Woody Shaw, to name a few Biakey and the Messengers piay a nisionc roie as one ot me codifier's of the bop-funk fusion. Even '50s rhythm and blues bands making the transition to rock and roll look to him as a model. Messenger music has man aged to continue to sound fresh through 25 years of gimmicks and trends, and despite the valid ex pansions the music has under gone. Listen to the message Saturday night. The performance is spon sored by the Black Student Union Fashion, jazz on tap Friday A fashion show consisting of spring casual wear and a few evening things, aH designed by U of O students, plus Pleasure, an eight-piece, Portland-based band Men, canines in photo show A series of black and white photographs by Sam Fujisaka ti tled, ‘ Local Men and Barking Dogs" is now being shown in the Barn Door Gallery. Photos are mostly of persons encountered in the local area. Fujisaka is a doc toral student in anthropology. The gallery is located in Okie Oregon Art and Antiques in the third floor of the Smede Hotel, and is open from 10:30 a m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The prints will be displayed through the first week in June which plays funky, rhyhmic, jazz tinged soul music will happen Fri day as part of the Black Arts Festi val. The events will occur one after the other in the EMU Ballroom. Pleasure released its first album last spring on the Fantasy label. It was very well received for its interesting blend of swing music with a rather funky lilt. Wayne Henderson, trombonist for the Crusaders, produced the album. Pleasure consists of Marlon McClain, guitar and vocals; Nathaniel Phillips, bass and voc als; Dennis Springer, tenor sax; Dan Brewster, trombone and voc als; Bruce Carter, drums; Bruce Smith, percussion and vocals; Sherman Davis, lead vocalist; and Donald Hepburn, vocals. Tickets for both events together are $1. The fashion show is at 8 p.m. and Pleasure follows at 9. Both are sponsored by the Black Student Union. The film allows the teachers to communicate for themselves without commentary from the filmmakers. Sunseed will be shown at 3 and 8 p.m. After the 3 p.m. showing the guides from the Smiling Forehead Sufi Center will conduct a class in Sufi Dancing. These dances combine movement, sound, chanting, and breath into a medi tation leading to heightened states of awareness. Following the dancing there will be a satsang or session of singing and chanting, and a performance of dance and music. The 8 p.m. showing of the film will be preceded by group chant ing and followed by Sufi dancing. For those who are unfamiliar with the wide variety of spiritual paths being practiced around them here is a fine opportunity for exposure. For those who have felt that inner awakening, here is an op portunity to participate and ex perience in depth many different paths of realization and the one heart which encompasses them all. The event is being sponsored by the Smiling Forehead Sufi Center Admission will be $1.50. r Prof, featured in 'Soiree' University Music Professor Neil Wilson will be the featured baritone in “Eight Songs for a Mad King" during Lane Com munity College’s performance Soiree De Trois, Friday and Saturday. The Soiree is de scribed as an evening of music, dance, and verse, and it will be presented at 8 p.m. both evenings at the LCC Perform ing Arts Theater. On leave from the University this term, Wilson says he has been working on a book and some new music as well as the LCC production. During the past concert season he has performed extensively with the Seattle and Oregon Sym phonies. “Eight Songs" is a vocal pre sentation composed by Peter Maxwell Davies with poetic text by Randolph Stow and George III. Conducted by Gene Aitken of LCC, the work was sug gested by a miniature mechan ical organ which played eight tunes. The songs describe the King s monologue wnue nsien ing to his performing birds, and interpretation of the piece is open as to whether it is Mad George speaking, or someone who thinks he is Mad George. Wilson points out that “Eight Songs” is unusual for its use of non-traditional vocal sounds, ranging from gutteral groans to shrieks and screams. Aitken will also conduct the Jazz Lab Band in the Soiree's other segment, “Mid-May Inner Space”. The music for this piece was composed by Dick Grove, and will feature the Performance Dance class of LCC with choreography by Nicola Crafts. The music for “Inner Space” will be used to explore the "inner space” of women through the medium of dance.
