The article was written by George Belknap, University editor emeritus. In addition to providing the library’s first reference collection, he helped save the University from a sheriff’s auction. As president of the Oregon and California Railroad Company, Vil lard gave the University some $7,000 to cover the major portion of unpaid debts that had been ac crued during the construction of the school’s first building — now named Deady Hall. In 1881, Villard promised to do nate $1,000 for a library. He also undertook to have the most suita ble works of reference “selected by competent experts.'1 The 359 books were finally shipped to the University in 1882 and, says the article, “they were in some ways a remarkable collec tion.’’ The collection ran contrary to the curriculum at the time which emphasized Greek, Latin, Ger man and French languages, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology and biology. It included 243 volumes of polit ical history, 26 volumes of literary history and eight volumes of art history. “Ancient and modern non-English philology...and trans lations of ancient historians was represented by a sparse selection of dictionaries, the sciences by nine volumes." “Imprint: Oregon" is edited by Martin Schmitt, special collections curator, E.C. Kemp, acquisitions librarian and Keith Richard, ar chivist, and is now available for $1 from the library. Sierra Club to show films The Eugene chapter of the Sierra Club will be holding its monthly evening program tonight at 7:30. The program will be pre sented in Courtroom #1 in City Hall and will feature two Sierra Club films “Glen Canyon" and "West Chichagof." The public is invited. The film “Glen Canyon" is con cerned with the loss of what some claimed was one of the most scenic areas in Utah’s canyon lands. The area was flooded be -...€l al cause only a few people knew of its existence, says the Sierra Club. The second film, "West Chichagof," shows the ongoing struggle between the U.S. Forest Service and conservationists over the fate of this island in the Alas kan panhandle. At issue is the forest service's ability to clearcut the island and the effect of the re cent Tongass court decision ban ning clearcutting in Alaska. Burrows slated to speak tonight Mary Burrows, incumbent democratic candidate for state representative from District 41, will address the ASUO-sponsored SEARCH class on student legisla tive issues tonight at 7 in the EMU Forum. All studwits are invited to attend. Eugene council seeks planner The Eugene City Council is again inviting citizen applications for appointment to one of the city’s major decision-making bodies. Before appointing someone to fill the vacancy created by the res ignation of Planning Commis sioner Howard Bon nett, the coun cil will review applications re ceived earlier this year from citi zens who indicated interest in the planning commission. Other persons wishing to be considered for the appointment may obtain an application from the city manager's office, 777 Pearl St. Applications must be returned to the manager s office by 5 p.m. Monday for consideration Persons who on earlier applica tions designated service on the planning commission as a low priority interest are welcome to file a revised application if they wish to be considered for the appoint ment.
