Teamster talks unsuccessful; strike begins ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, III. (AP) — Teamsters set up scat tered picket fines in several states early Thursday as negotiations on a nationwide contract continued past the midnight deadline. Representatives of the team sters union and the trucking indus try met with Pres. Ford’s top labor trouble-shooters in this Chicago suburb. The strike deadline had been set for 10 p.m. PST — 1 a.m. EST — but it passed with no new word from the negotiators. Meanwhile, some Teamsters along the East Coast and in De troit started picketing. The Teamsters Union repre sents 400,000 drivers who handle 60 per cent of the nation's man ufactured goods. A nationwide strike would be the first since the union started negotiating master contracts in 1964. Teamsters Local 299, the big gest in the Detroit area, said pick ets were out around the city. A spokesman said 500 Detroit firms are under contract and a majority were unofficially on strike, while 16 firms had signed interim a greements and were being permit ted by Teamsters to operate. There were similar reports from Teamsters Local 375 in Buffalo, N.Y., where pickets were out at more than 100 trucking firms. Teamsters officials in North Carolina and South Carolina also called for truck drivers to go on strike. W.C. Barbee, president of the Teamsters Joint Council No. 9, said the strike was declared after union officials received a teleyam from negotiators in Arlington Heights saying talks had “reached an impasse."
