9th in nation last year, UO could be even better in 76 By JEFF NIELSON Of the Emerald The Oregon women's track team has a record of continuing success. Although the Ducks are entering only their third year of na tional competition, they reached a plateau last year when they finished as one of the top 10 women’s collegiate squads by placing ninth in the national AIAW meet. This year, the prospects for a good season are bright. The Ducks graduated only one com petitor who made it to nationals—Lynn Winbigler, who took third place in the discus. Two others are back —junior Mary Of ficer, a second place finisher in the pentathlon, and sophomore Karen Marshall, who placed fourth in the shot-put at the national meet. Add to this nucleus a strong crop of JC transfers and promising freshmen, and you have the good development" that Oregon coach Bob Ritson talks about. Although he admits to "not being a great forecaster,” Ritson thus far is pleased with the prog ress shown by the team. "Practice has been coming along real strong,” said Ritson. "The middle distances are coming along well. All the way around, we've (assistant coach Tom Heinonen) been satisfied. We re definitely looking for an improve ment from last year—especially in the middle distances." Those middle distances are an chored by veterans. Junior Kim Conner, Oregon s top cross coun try last fall brings experience to the 440, 880 and mile, where she will alternate between events. Cheryl Bates, a transfer from Lane C.C., has also shown improve ment after coming off a mononuc leosis attack. The other events have also be nefited from new faces. Carol Amaral, a JC transfer from California, hasn’t been beaten during winter competition in the sprints. Her wins include victories at the Portland Indoor Invitational and the Washington Invitational in Seattle. "The meets we do have are multi ple meets where five, six or seven schools compete. This leads to fewer contests." And if the team has a goal, it is to “at least equal last year." “We've much more dqpt h at all the running events," said Ritson. “To equal last year would be the least we could do."
