‘That’s gotta make us No. V Flying Ducks slash top-ranked Sun Devils Photo by James Link Tom Turedson set one of three Oregon school records Kramer out as Ducks host finale Oregon s chances of knocking off eighth-ranked Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo tonight in the Ducks last home wrestling meet were dealt a serious blow when 158-pounder Kevin Kramer came up with a hip pointer in a mid-week practice session. "We're definitely in the hole," said Oregon Coach Ron Finley, "but I expect us to compete pretty well, even with the team we have. Tonight's meet will mark the final home appearance of NCAA heavyweight runner-up Greg Gibson and 134-pounder Shuichi Shoji. I d like to make it a special tribute to those guys, said Finley. Shoji holds a 23-4-3 record while Gibson is 19-3-1 Freshman Gary Bailey will sub stitute for Kramer. Tim Stroble, meanwhile, is dropping down a weight to 167 to replace injured Randy Besaw and freshman Brian Dunagan will wrestle in the 177 bracket. With the Pacific-8 Champion ships just a week away, Joe Sade (126) will be held out. Dewey Travis will replace Sade, as he s done most of the season "It s a move we have to make with the Pac-8s only a week away," said Finley,. We just can t take a chance on these guys get ting hurt anymore.” Cal Poly 12-2-1, has only lost to second-rated Iowa State, and third-ranked Oklahoma State The Mustangs tied fifth-rated Ok lahoma. Charles Harmon will be Gibson s opponent and through the Washington meet had posted a 14-6 record. "Shoji and Randy Robinson should do a pretty good job for us," Finley estimated. “I expect Randy’s match (against Ron Mc Kinney) to be a pretty close match." The 190-pound bout could very well be the best match of the even ing (and pivitol if the Ducks are within striking distance), pitting Cal Poly’s Chris Anaya against Bob Bragg. In their first meeting Anaya humiliated the junior col lege transfer, 10-0. Bragg was in jured at the time, but will face the Mustang at full strength tonight. If we can compete like this at the NCAA Meet, we ll win it.” The Flying Ducks' 216.75 total ranks second in the nation only to the Sun Devils’ 217.60 set last week and tops Oregon s previous best this year of 210.55. The meet, as 2,500 psyched-up fans will agree, was nothing short of awesome. “I've never coached a team that put together such a perfect performance,” said Balles ter. “We just didn t break. Not once. No less than 28 performances were rated 9.0 or above and an incredible 10 performances scored higher than 9.5. The Flying Ducks set three school records. Tom Truedson hit 9.65 in the pommel horse, Scott McEldowney scored 9.65 on the rings and Bob Rikli and Mark Stone upped the high bar record to 9.65. “I’ve picked an outstanding gymnast every meet,” said Balles ter. “Tonight I’d have to pick the entire team.” The Flying Ducks won every event except the parallel bars, where Arizona State's Larry Cox took honors with 9.6.
