HRC plans
two awards
The Eugene Human Rights
Commission wants to know about
people and organizations in
Eugene that have made outstand
ing contributions in the field of
human rights. The commission
plans to recognize one such indi
vidual and organization with its
annual human rights award, ac
cording to Betsy Merck, city
human rights specialist. The two
awards will be presented at a
human rights commission meet
ing on Tuesday, February 24.
Merck said that criteria for eligi
ble award candidates are that the
individual or organization be in
volved in human rights activities in
the community, be committed
personally or organizationally to
the advancement of human rights,
and (if an organization) be an
equal opportunity group with a his
tory of human rights involvement.
The award presentation will
come at the last official meeting
for the present Eugene Human
Rights Commission. A new
human rights ordinance abolishes
the existing commission as of
March 1 and replaces it with four
separate commissions on the
rights of women, minorities, the
handicapped, and the aging.
