Students in Germany have one advantage that especially lures the test-worn American students: no midterms or finals in any courses. Instead, German students study in their major field continuously for two years wihout any nasty cramming interruptions. Studying consists of Vorlesungen institution, since he is still technically registered at his home school. (lectures). UDungen (exercises;, Seminare (seminars), Praktika (practicals), and independent research. Upon completion of two years study, the student must pass one overall examination to graduate. Though the Oregon student studies in Germany for only one year, he isn't immune from grades. At the end of his year abroad, he must present an accumulation of his work to the resident director, a professor from an institution of OSSHE. The / resident director then approves the work load and assigns equivalent Oregon term line numbers to each course. “Finding Oregon equivalents is not always easy/' remarks associate professor James McWilliams, a resident director last year. “Obviously, there are differences between German and American curricula, but we always find something to match the German courses." McWilliams further explains that a student can graduate from f K his Oregon school while at a German institution, since he is still technically registered at his home school. Students in Germany are basically free to choose their courses, since they aren t faced with the long lists of required courses which abound in American schools. McWilliams says that the German higher education system offers as complete a curriculum as Oregon's, except for such trade courses as home economics or secretarial skills. “The Germans would scoff at anyone wanting to take such petty courses at their institutions,” he remarks. All German institutions are state-owned. Therefore, students receive a number of remarkable fringe benefits, including partially subsidized cafeteria meals, opera discounts, public transportation discounts and phenomenal rates on student trips throughout Europe. "As a student,” McWilliams comments, “one can go practically everywhere in Europe—Berlin, Moscow, Turkey, everywhere These trips are available only for students and are the greatest educational opportunities." “For example," he continues, "the week-long tnp to Berlin costs about $35 per person. This includes all expenses: room and board, transportation, and even an opera. The highlight of the week, of course, is the journey into East Berlin. Textbooks are also very inexpensive in Germany. McWilliams estimates the cost of books for the year to be $25 McWilliams also estimates that the entire year of studying costs the student $ 1000 in excess of his regular expenses here in Oregon. Total costs for the 1975-76 academic year were as follows: Undergraduate residents $2,940, undergraduate non-residents, $4,401 and all post-baccalaureate and graduate students, $3,252.
