Swimming, tennis programs to stage fund-raisers Marathon swim match set Marine Captain Al Jones, a man who has done some incredible physical feats while raising money for charity, will attempt to defy the odds once again as he joins forces with the University of Oregon swim team in a special swimathon to raise funds for the Duck aqua program. Captain Jones, who recently swam the Snake and Columbia rivers, will try a unique record attempt of stamina against Oregon's top all-around swimmer, John McConnochie. The endurance test will get underway Thursday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. in Leighton Pool. Basically.the contest boils down to Captain Jones, representing the Marine Corps and its physical fitness qualities, challenging Mc Connochie to see who can swim the greatest number of hours and the greatest distance. To make things even more interesting. Captain Jones will swim with his hands tied and feet shackled, and his progress will be limited to whatever movements will propel him through the water. McConnochie, on the other hand, will swim his normal competitive crawl stroke that has produced numerous Webfoot school records. Captain Jones has predicted he'll outlast Mc Connochie and, if he does, he'll then untied himself and continue Ns swim attempting to surpass the number of laps achieved by McConnochie. Oregon swim coach Don Van Rossen hopes to raise $6,000 through the event. The money will be used to send a contingent of Duck swimmers to send a contingent of Duck swimmers to the NCAA Championships in New Jersey. Van Rossen plans to have pledge cards made available in order to sponsor each swimmer through the marathon. No admission will be charged for spectators. Captain Jones has indicated plans for two more swims following Ns duel with McConnonchie. He plans to swim the entire length of the Mississippi River and also the Amazon River in the near future.
