Cross-country squads make it a double By KIM CONNER Of the Emerald Reflect on University of Oregon cross-country for a minute and visions of Steve Prefontaine, Paul Geis or NCAA cross-country championships crowd the mind. But the UO women's cross country team too is establishing a reputation in the formidable r Oregon tradition by posting victories in Washington and Oregon Saturday. Behind Debbie Roth's seventh place effort, Oregon tallied 100 points to dominate the Fort Casey Open in Washington. "I felt pretty good for the shape I've been in," said Roth after the race, confessing her training of late consists of "walking to classes." "It was weird, seeing Doris Brown within striking distance," she said, "maybe I should start training and then I'll see what I can really do." Kim Conner finished 14th as Oregon's second runner followed by Dala Ramsey, 15th, and Cheryl Bates, 31st. Mona McGriff, Jennifer Bates and Cindi Eckersley took 33 through 35, respectively. Meanwhile at the Mt. Hood Invitational the Oregon junior varsity squad with 47 points trounced varsity teams from Central Oregon Community College (87) and Oregon College of Education. Heinonen also considers Simon Fraser University of Canada a serious threat. University of British Columbia, also a Canadian team who placed three runners in the top ten, is not a member of the NCWSA, and will not be a contender for the NCSWA team title. Oregon's women's cross country team will compete next at Tokatee Golf Course, November 18. Hockey team loses a squeaker By JEFF NIELSON Of the Emerald The University field hockey team initiated 1975 season play Sunday with a 1-0 loss to the Eugene Field Hockey Club at Autzen Stadium. The game's lone score came with less than 10 minutes left in the second half, turning what had been a close contest into a narrow victory for the Eugene Club in the afternoon practice session. Oregon coach Becky Sisley was satisfied with the Duck squad's performance against a team that she considers to be "one of the best in the Northwest." "For the first game of the season, we really looked good," said Sisley. "We had several scoring opportunities. I felt that the girls did a good job of im plementing the things that we've done in practice." Oregon plays OCE on Thurs day, and from Monmouth will travel to Idaho for three weekend games with the University of Idaho, Washington State University and Central Washington State College. Soccer clubs with win, tie over weekend Oregon's undergraduate soccer clubs notched a win and a tie in Intercollegiate soccer association play here over the weekend. Oregon racked up a 7-0 victory over Pacific College in the opener Saturday, the second team battling to a 2-2 tie with Pacific Lutheran University of Washington. Oregon scored early in the second contest, but PLU came back with a goal before the half. PLU added another score early in the second half to go ahead 3-2. Oregon's Mike Tienia converted a penalty kick with three minutes left in the contest to knot the score.
